Tulane football Preview 2023: Tulane Picks for Betting

Willie Fritz had Tulane on the right track until ’21, when 2-10 was a massive disappointment. 

I was slightly bullish for 2022, citing so much depth and hidden talent.  Fritz’s team lost twice when favored, but also pulled off four upsets as they roared to a 12-2 record.  Expectations have been elevated.

Tulane Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Slade Nagle is Tulane’s 4^th offensive coordinator in as many years.  With returning QB Pratt, the offense is in good hands.  Four OL starters return to block for a decent group of RB’s but missing will be their star (Spears, who ran 1,581-6.9, with 19 TD’s). 

I’m a bit more worried defensively, where they also have a new coordinator.  The new guy was great last year at Troy, so the bigger worry is replacing their top five tacklers.  The DL has the most returning experience.  They allowed a solid 4.0 per carry last year, and that might improve with the much easier schedule.  I’ll chart the pass D% early and often with all the changes. 

The lead PK (11-12) returns, and the return game looks good.  Tulane has to replace yet another coordinator however.

Tulane 2023 Predictions, Tulane Schedule:

In 2022 the Green Wave went 3-1 vs. Cincy, Houston and UCF, avenging their mid-season loss to UCF in the conference title game.  All three are off the schedule and out of the AAC. 

They open hosting South Alabama, which is a highly dangerous game.  They get a rare host of a team from the SEC (OL Miss) and QB Pratt could make this one interesting (as usual, the Rebels have plenty of roster turnover). 

Tulane has played So. Miss often, including a 27-24 loss as a double-digit home favorite last year.  It’s a road trip, but Tulane should be the better team.  I’ll be checking how the new staff is faring, the back seven on defense, and how the decent RB crop is doing without its star. 

Tulane has a week off before playing at Memphis. 

The Tigers are not invincible at home, and a win here sets them up for a repeat AAC title opportunity.  There are three interesting November games.  They end at East Carolina, at FAU and the finale hosting UTSA.  2-1 in these games might be enough to put them in that title game

Tulane Football Bottom Line:

9-3, which would be less than their 9.5 win total but enough to call this a good season.  Would I be surprised at 10-2?  No, but it’s not easy replacing a star RB, your top five tacklers, and all three coordinators.

Tulane Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

I am leaning vs. in their opener, but might wait after that to see how the new players and coaches are doing.  If I’m satisfied, the lean is plus as a road dog at Memphis.
