Tulane College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Willie Fritz had Tulane on the right track until ’21, when 2-10 was a massive disappointment.  He won 23 more games the past two seasons and left for Houston.  Jon Sumrall went 23-5 at Troy.  Tulane is doing something right. 

2024 Tulane NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

Ty Thompson takes over at QB for Michael Pratt.  Transfers from USC and Alabama hope to keep the pass game relevant.  The OL has experience, but three starters are new (LT from Troy).  Both coordinators are from Troy, who was especially sound defensively under Sumrall. 

A few of them will compete for spots on the defense, which suffered some losses, especially in relation to the pass rush.  Four of the five starting DB’s may be transfers.  I expect some regression, but the staff is solid.  The new PK has a near 80% stat sheet.  He replaces an 80% kicker.  The return game loses a good kick returner.  

Tulane Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

About 8-4.  There are reasons to think Tulane needs time to make the new pieces work, especially defensively, and the schedule layout is sneaky tough for games 1-6. 

I’d lean UNDER 8 wins, but I like the staff, and the back half of the season could include plenty of wins.  Watch QB play and the defensive stat sheet closely.  LATE NOTE: The schedule grid came out much closer to 7-5.  Under 8 wins remains a possibility.

2024 Tulane Football Schedule and Games to Watch

There’s no easing into the season like in ’23.  Tulane hosts Kansas St week two.  They upset the Wildcats in ’22, so this game will catch their attention.  After going to Oklahoma, Tulane stays on the road to face a rested Louisiana. 

That’s not ideal.  Still with no rest, Tulane hosts improving USF and then goes to offensively solid UAB.  I have 3-3 as the ceiling.  As long as they split games 5-6, the goal of an AAC title berth remains solidly in place. 

The game at North Texas is winnable.  They’ll be favored at Charlotte, but that game is off a short week, so the scheduling is not ideal.  Navy has fared very well vs. Tulane.  This staff aims to change that dynamic.  The finale is hosting Memphis.  If all goes well, that game will be meaningful.

Tulane 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

The 9/21 game at Louisiana could be a play against spot.  I’m leaning underdog either way in the final game vs. Memphis (11/28).
