Philip Montgomery wasn’t making enough progress to keep his job.  Kevin Wilson has previous head coaching experience, plus he has six years as Ohio State’s coordinator.  This move could be a good one, given time.

Tulsa Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Tulsa returns a total of nine starters from 2022.  QB, RB and WR all look weaker.  The OL returns three starters and has to cut down on their 45 sacks allowed.  Five of their top six tacklers are gone.  After two good years stopping the run, the numbers reverted back to bad old habits (5.1-212 per game). 

The pass defense percentage was decent.  The new coordinator was hired very late and has to find his footing in Fall camp and probably in games 1-6 before the bye week. 

Improvement from 16 defensive sacks must be charted.  A new PK is in, and he has to fill behind someone who went 17-21.

Tulsa 2023 Predictions, Tulsa Schedule:

Tulsa scored late and beat visiting NIU 38-35 a year ago.  The rematch is at their place.  They’ve beaten Temple the past two seasons but I believe the gap has closed.  Win both of these games and they will be 3-3 at the break, but 2-4 is much more likely. 

Tulsa has been 50% in home games, and worse as a home favorite.  They’ll host Rice, Charlotte, and North Texas down the stretch and this has to be at least a 2-1 outcome. 

All three road games look tough (likely a double-digit dog as of this writing), so that makes the home games all the more critical. 

Tulsa Football Bottom Line:

4-8 is the safest prediction, with the goal being 4-4 in the AAC. 

Questions at QB and RB, and chemistry issues defensively have me thinking this year won’t be great.  Meanwhile, there’s a new answer to the trivia question I’ve posed here for the past decade.  Do you know who is Tulsa’s career receiving leader?  It’s now NOT Howard Twilley, who last played in 1965, Keylon Stokes is the leader now, just 57 years after Twilley left.  Yes, Stokes is gone as well..

Tulsa Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

Tulsa is 33-54 ATS as a home favorite.  Small crowds do not help.  I’ll be in fade mode more than follow this year..
