UAB College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Bill Clark for President! He was the best coach since Bill Snyder at taking a team from ground zero, making them near elite for their level.
Sadly, Clark’s spinal issues had him step down in August ’22. I’ve faded this team big-time in season win totals since then, including Trent Dilfer’s 1st year when he finished 4-8. Now that he’s had a year of real coaching (came from Lipscomb Academy), can he develop this team and get them back to a bowl game?
2024 UAB NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
Jacob Zeno returns at QB, and he can build on a sold ’23 season (74%). They lose a really good RB, but the offense they run tends to support the run game, and there are a few options to choose from. Be careful what you read about their OL.
They do NOT return five starters. They do have a variety of people to choose from (approximately 3.5 starters), but two spots may be held down by transfers. Sacks allowed did jump to 32 last year. The defense allowed 35 or more points nine times, followed by 31 and 24 in their other two lined games. The road point defense was at 41.5 per game.
All defensive #’s regressed. Four of the top five tacklers are gone, but the top two pass rushers return. The secondary is especially raw. My job is to balance the mediocre talent on board with the possibility that year two for the staff will be better.
The special team unit as a whole was rated poorly. The new PK (there’s competition) has never attempted a field goal.
UAB Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
6 or 7 wins. UAB plays eight teams who did not go to a bowl game last year, and faces NO teams with a projected top 35 Power #.
OL chemistry is one issue, but everything else is contingent on defensive progress. I encourage readers to monitor UAB’s stop troops on a weekly basis.

2024 UAB Football Schedule and Games to Watch
UAB drops Georgia from the schedule as well as UTSA. I need to see progress week two when they travel to play lowly UL Monroe. I’ll be using those full team results as a start of my actionable plan for AAC action. Navy beat them 31-7 a year ago. T
hat was their 10th game of the season, and despite the loss, UAB was rated two points higher than Navy at the end of the year. This is a must win or else there will be doubts about this year for sure, and maybe more than that. Playing (at) Army two weeks later can’t hurt, as UAB, much like some other AAC teams will now get a chance to defend two primarily run-oriented attacks.
Four of UAB’s final five games offer win opportunities. They host Tulsa and UConn, and later, host Rice and go to Charlotte. For the Tulsa and Charlotte games, it may be a simple case of deciding which coaching staff has progressed the most. The other check is of course, UAB’s defense.
