UMass College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Massachusetts (UMass) is 24-112 the past twelve seasons, and 6-48 lately, with few meaningful wins. This seems like fun.
2024 UMass NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
Last year in this spot I started by listing “everything related to offense”.
Their 12.3 point offense improved to 23.2, the 3.4 run attack (uncorrected for sacks and kneel downs, as I do NOT chart this area for teams without individual sheets) improved to 4.4 per carry, and QB accuracy entered the modern era, (61%) after years hovering around 50%.
Their QB returns, and more improvement is quite possible. The top two RB’s transferred, so regression may happen. There is a new offensive coordinator, but he’s had some success in the past. Defensively, UMass allowed 38 points per game and 5.7 per carry. The run defense was last under 5.0 (4.9) in ’17, and the six-year average is 6.0.
I expect another year of challenging issues vs. the run. Despite a nickname of “Dr. Blitz”, Don Brown’s teams have just 37 sacks the past two seasons, and the school as a whole has 79 sacks over a six-year period. They play decent pass defense, but part of that is because teams can easily run on the Minutemen.
Still, the secondary has some talent and experience. Last year’s PK was just 11-20. There’s competition to replace him, but all choices are untested. I’ll chart this area as well.
UMass Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
4-8 as a ceiling. I “think” we’ll see a bit more offensive improvement, but the run defense is bottom tier, and the kicking game, in case games are close, is completely unproven. UMass was in the MAC from 2012-2015, and will re-enter the MAC next year. Will Don Brown be the coach when that happens?

2024 UMass Football Schedule and Games to Watch
UMass opens hosting Eastern Michigan (late game revenge). UMass lost on a long TD pass with under a minute left last year, so having 1st game revenge is a perk.
Can they compete with 3-9 Buffalo at their place? They should defeat 3-8 Central Conn St, so if they split road games at Buffalo and at NIU, 3-3 is possible. Another FCS team, 4-7 Wagner, should be a win. The only other winnable game is the finale, hosting UConn. What’s both team’s mindset entering this game?
UMass 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
It’s usually fruitless for me to get involved in their games (large spreads, more about the motivation of their opponents. I’ll likely stay on the sidelines for most, if not all of their games this season. Maybe that will change when they enter the MAC in ’25.
