UNC Charlotte College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Head Coach Biff Poggi rubbed me the wrong way in his press conferences prior to his 1st season. His team went 3-9, with a win vs. an FCS team, and two close wins in the AAC. Eight of the nine losses were by double-digits. What did he learn from ’23?
2024 UNC Charlotte NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
Biff Poggi went from hedge fund investor to a supporting role with Michigan to Head Coach. Some of his staff had light resumes as well. While QB Ivey returns, his 4-10 ratio, and 55% accuracy is replaceable. Max Brown was lightly used at Florida but may win the job.
Two Power Five RB’s will compete with the holdovers. I think Iowa State RB Norton could get the lead job. Regardless, Poggi is on record saying “I want to run the ball”.
There’s experience at WR/TE. The OL has some returning talent, but four transfers may start, three from Power Five programs. Given that this is NOT a Power conference, the offense should improve, as long as the coaching staff can help.
Nothing special took place defensively in ’23. Only two of the top eight tacklers return. Far fewer transfers are projected to have a defensive impact. Given the circumstance, I can’t predict an uptick, although the staff gained necessary experience. Kicking was highly erratic. Can the returning PK improve?
UNC Charlotte Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
3-3 to an absolutely critical game at Navy, but only one more win after that. UNC Charlotte likely stays home during bowl season, and if the coaches do not improve, 4-8 will be the ceiling.

2024 UNC Charlotte Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Charlotte hosts rebuilding James Madison week one and FCS Gardner Webb week three. 3-3 is doable if they win these two, and find another win at Indiana, at Rice and home to East Carolina. Having a week off before facing run-oriented Navy is a perk.
Navy shut them out 14-0 last year. The next three opponents all went to bowl games in ’23. The final two opponents (FAU and UAB) are higher rated over Charlotte, but did not go bowling last year. Interestingly enough, both teams have win totals that indicate improvement. Charlotte must improve as well or the 2nd half of the season will not be pleasant.
UNC Charlotte 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
I took Charlotte as a double-digit underdog 8/31 vs. James Madison. A bad loss here would be a real poor omen. For balancing action, I’m thinking the 49ers will not be at their best in the 2nd of back-to-back road games.
That could mean possible plays on Rice 9/28 and Memphis 10/26, but I need further confirmation, as both opponents are not trustworthy at home vs. the spread.
