UNC College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Mack Brown is an above average coach, but for the 2nd straight season, the Tar Heels imploded down the stretch. Outscored 100-50 in their final three games, another season ended on a downer.
Yet another new defensive coordinator will try to fix things in ‘24.
2024 UNC NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
Let’s begin with the defense. Last year I asked if Gene Chizik was the answer? He was not, and Geoff Collins is the new guy in town.
On paper, the talent is the same or a bit better (much more experienced), but take out two games (South Carolina, Campbell) and the defense produced just 14 sacks in the remaining 11 games, this after just 17 sacks in 14 games played in ’22.
That has to change! Other than that, I’m only slightly improving the defensive #’s. Offensively, Max Johnson (LSU and A&M) replaces Drake Maye, while RB Hampton (1,504-5.9, 15 rush TD’s) returns as one of the top NCAA RB’s.
I like this WR unit, but the OL is down some and may continue to be sack prone. The theme in the ACC is solid kicking. Their kicker was 19-20.
UNC Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
If we FINALLY see defensive improvement then 10-2 is in play. If not, so is 7-5 for UNC.
The telling points will be defensive pass pressure, and points allowed, especially in the 4th quarter. I think this can get to 8-4, and maybe even 9-3 (no play for me on the overs). Like it or not, another mediocre finish to the season might have fans calling for Mack Brown to retire.

2024 UNC Football Schedule and Games to Watch
The schedule is somewhat favorable, both inside as well as outside the ACC. A split of games at Minnesota and home to rebuilding James Madison gets them to 3-1 before ACC play, but 4-0 has to be what they expect.
How’s the UNC defense prior to going to Duke on 9/28? Bad defense has clearly contributed to their 2-9 ATS RF ledger the past four seasons, with six outright losses when placed as a RF. The history is good hosting Pittsburgh, but there looks to be a scenario where the Panthers could be dangerous in this spot.
The Tar Heels have a well-played week off before going to Virginia. After starting 9-1 in ’22 and 6-0 last year, the goal once again is at least 7-1 now, before heading to FSU. Everything hinges on the defense and DC Collins to get them to that #.
I’m unsure if North Carolina can upset FSU but if all goes well, they can be very competitive. Games hosting Wake have been shootouts (58-55, 59-53). Which team is playing better defensively? I’ll precheck Boston College and their home record (SU and ATS) with the new staff before their 11/13 affair.
The annual, and very crazy battle with NC St closes out ’24. Expect the unexpected when these two teams meet.
UNC 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
I’ll check their defense weeks 1-2, and if it’s struggling, I lean NC Central on 9/14. If two of three solid conditions come to fruition, then it triggers a play on Pittsburgh 10/5. It’s underdog or bust in the finale either way (NC State).
