UNLV Football Preview 2023: UNLV Picks for Betting BETTER

Since ‘13, UNLV has gone 5-7 twice, in ’17 and last year. 

Once 4-1, they suffered three one-score losses, the last of which was at Hawaii, favored by 11.  Marcus Arroyo was fired.  Barry Odom went 25-25 as a Head Coach with Missouri.  UNLV is thinking bowl game for 2023.

UNLV Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

There’s hope that progress made last year with the run game continues, as former Pitt RB Vincent Davis is here.  The OL has to protect better, and that’s on my watch list. 

UNLV’s top two tacklers were also their top two sackers.  Both are gone.  I’m only slightly worse on my defensive projections with the new staff, but I’ll keep an eye out to see if something unusual occurs.  A PK who went 18-19 is gone, but he’s been replaced by a Missouri St transfer who shows a 45-54 career ledger. 

Overall special team performance has been poor but James Shibest is the new coordinator and he has an elite track record.

UNLV 2023 Predictions, UNLV Schedule:

Games 3-4 are home to Vandy and at UTEP.  The biggest pre-check will be the run D.  Games 5-7 are home to Hawaii (bad loss last year), at Nevada (won last year’s rivalry game in a closer than expected score) and home to Colo St.  There’s enough talent to be 4-3 up to this point, but to achieve 4-3 or more, old habits must be broken, such as winning when favored and winning on the road. 

Games 9-10 are at lowly New Mexico (great record at) and home to Wyoming (bad losses in ’19-’20).  Will the finale hosting SJ St be for a bowl berth?  The host ledger reads 50-50.

UNLV Football Bottom Line: Total Wins Prediction

 5-7 or 6-6?  Odom is an established coach, so 6-6 has to be the goal.  I’m cautiously optimistic UNLV can go bowling, but there are enough roster holes to make me want to see them play on the field and earn my respect

UNLV Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

My record here has not been good the past few seasons.  I’m looking dog only in the UTEP game, and – or X if installed as a home favorite vs. Colorado State.  I’ll wait on the rest.
