CFP Ratings Overview

Most NCAA teams have played ten games.  With just two games left, the inaugural 12-team playoff field is taking shape.  Here’s a list of my top 20 teams, with comments, as of 11/20. 

This list is based solely on my Power Ratings and will certainly be different from the current rankings put out by the playoff committee.

1 Ohio State – 102.5 Slight surprise that the margin is this much, but the one loss was 32-31, AT Oregon.

2T Oregon – 98.5 3-0 in tossup games.  May not have peaked just yet.  Big Ten title game winner #1 playoff seed?

2T Alabama – 98.5 While the loss at Vanderbilt hurts, the Tide has been more dominant than most at times.

4T Texas – 98 Mostly dominating, except in the Georgia loss.  Closing game at A&M will be a big one.

4T Georgia – 98 “Good” Losses to Alabama and Mississippi, and wins vs. Clemson, Texas and Tennessee.

6 Mississippi – 97 The team NO ONE wants to face in the playoffs.  DL is amazing, and when healthy WR’s are too.

7 Penn State – 94.5 Wins when expected, but still can’t get over the hump vs. Ohio State, and struggled at USC.

8 Notre Dame – 94 Perplexing week two loss to NIU and a soft schedule, but led by defense, wins are dominant.

9 Tennessee – 91 Defense outperforming offense.  Win over Alabama offset by loss at Arkansas.

10 Clemson – 90 Loss to Louisville hurt.  Other than their run defense, well balanced.  Closes w/South Carolina.

11 Miami Fla – 88 Two extremely lucky wins on resume, but the offense is loaded.  Would test anyone’s defense.

12 Indiana – 87.5 Massive coaching upgrade!  Yes, the schedule has been soft, but the wins have been dominant. 

13T Texas A&M – 87 No true signature wins, but Mike Elko has them playing at a high level in just his 1^st season.

13T LSU – 87 Three straight losses, all to top twenty teams on this list.  The defense is still not fixed.

15T South Carolina – 86 Early losses offset by recent four-game win streak.  Under the radar dangerous.

15T Colorado – 86 Best in the Big 12, with two outright superstars and a much-improved defense.

15T SMU – 86 Hit the ground running in the ACC.  Good run-pass balance and an underrated defense.

18 Tulane – 85 On 8-0 run vs. soft teams, but by the score of 347-119.  After last week, up by 2 over Boise.

19 Florida – 84.5 Just 5-5, but a brutal schedule.  My power number has found me huge value (6-1 ATS last 7).

20 Iowa State – 84  Several Big 12 teams close, but ISU’s resume is still strong.  The run defense has disappointed.
