USC College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

The PAC 12 had a nasty habit of eating their own.  Oregon and Utah traded knocking each other out of the playoffs, and in ‘22, Utah did the same to USC.  USC might have thrived in the PAC 12 with an expanded playoff, but that’s old news.  The mission now is to make their way into the top tier in the Big Ten.  
  
  

2024 USC NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

Defense, defense and defense (again).  USC allowed 34 or more points in EACH of their final eight regular season games.  UCLA’s defense was much better, and now their coordinator is here.  Eight defensive transfers are on the two-deep, with five slated to start, four from other PAC 12 schools. The ’24 schedule is tougher, but I’m projecting modest improvement (which will be checked).  The offense is user-friendly, so Mitch Moss should be fine. 

The RB unit has pass-catching ability, but my 4.5 per carry projection would be their lowest since Covid, ’20.  USC’s PK was erratic, going 3-3 from 40+, but 7-11 inside of 40 yards.

8-4.  The floor is no bowl if the defense isn’t ready, the road games prove troublesome and/or the kicking game stays erratic.  But still, it would not be a shock if USC is competitive and even dominant most of the year.  They seem to be flying under the radar.  This is all about the defense.

2024 USC Football Schedule and Games to Watch

In ’23 I noted that USC’s toughest five opponents were at the end of the year.  They were 0-5 in these games.  LSU is an upgrade, and that takes place immediately.  Games 3-6 are at Michigan, home to Wisky, at Minny and home to Penn State. 

What if this is just 3-3?  How fast can the new DC mold all the new defensive faces?  In games 7-12, the home tilts are vs. the better defensive teams (Rutgers, Nebraska, and well-rounded Notre Dame), while the road games are at Maryland, Washington and UCLA. 

The only “break” in the schedule is week two vs. Utah State.  My job is to assess the defense on a weekly basis, and also evaluate USC on the road.  Under Riley, they are 2-6 ATS as a road favorite. 
 

USC 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

The likely play is with Wisconsin on 9/28.  The favorite is 9-21 ATS in games vs. Washington.  As an aside, rush formula data is 38-24 ATS in their games, and 8-5 under Riley.  That will be something I consider as I evaluate their progress during the season.
