Utah College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Kyle Whittingham was the premier coach in the PAC 12.  2002 was their last losing season, so Whittingham, in 19 seasons, has NEVER had a losing record at Utah. 

Welcome to the Big 12.   

2024 Utah NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

QB.  Cam Rising is set to return after missing all of last season.  So is solid TE Brant Kuithe, although some periodicals do not list him yet as a starter. 

Attrition surprisingly hit the Utes at RB, but perhaps one of several lightly used players can take the lead.  Behind a decent, but not spectacular OL (as in the past), I’ve reduced the run projection to 4.4 per carry.  Utah has had amazing coaching stability. 

I don’t see any reason to deviate from their typical run D#’s, but they do lose pass rusher Jordan Ellis (12) to the NFL.  Several sophomores will need to step up in the secondary (two DB’s drafted).  One massive help is that the Utes faced several elite PAC 12 QB’s a year ago, including a trio of 1st round draft picks. 

This younger group should do fine, but it’s a check for me, just in case.  Kicking is solid. 

Utah Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

 8-1 with a split of games at Oklahoma St and home to TCU, giving them a 10-2 or 9-3 look overall.  My grid actually rates Kansas St a bit higher than Utah. 

Some players (QB, TE) must shake off rust, and the young RB’s, CB’s and pass rushers will need to deliver.  I don’t think this is one of their best teams, but with Whittingham in charge, I do expect them to be a factor in the Big 12 race, maybe even securing that elusive playoff bid.

2024 Utah Football Schedule and Games to Watch

Utah is likely to open 3-0 before playing their 1st recorded Big 12 game on 9/21.  That one is at Oklahoma St, and a win here sets them up to be the favorite in the Big 12 race. 

A loss does not eliminate them, but they’ll need to rebound by winning at home vs. Arizona (lost badly last year, but good home record and faces a new staff) and at home vs. a decent TCU squad.  I’ll precheck Utah’s pass D, as this young group will face off against two decent offensive squads. 

The final three games are at Colorado (big check of their defense, and home record), home to Iowa State (big check of Utah’s offense vs. one of the best defenses they will face) and at UCF, which could be a wild closing game.
  

Utah 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

Utah is 55-26 vs. the spread as a road dog.  They are 26-12 ATS off rest.  They are 28-10 ATS when picked via my rush stat formula. 

I didn’t even mention the Holy War, which is back in play with BYU now.  That’s a bitter rivalry, so I’ll look to fade Utah the following week (at Colorado), as long as it doesn’t interfere with the rush stat data.
