UTSA College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Jeff Traylor exited CUSA with back-to-back titles. His 1st year here produced a 7-1 conference record, but the last game loss at Tulane left them out of the AAC title game. The guy can coach!
2024 UTSA NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
Two concerns I had last year were the run defense and the kicking game. Both concerns were nicely addressed. 7th year QB Frank Harris is gone, as is his go-to WR. QB McCown had a modest stat sheet but led the Roadrunners to their 35-17 bowl victory.
The rest of the offense looks decent, but Harris and his firepower won’t be easy to duplicate. One defensive surprise was their 46 sacks. The lead guy (14) is gone, but the hope is that someone else will emerge.
The front seven is in decent shape, but there could be a slight drop vs. the pass. The special team unit is above average, with UTSA likely having the AAC’s top PK.
UTSA Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
What could hold UTSA back? There will be a drop at QB, perhaps leading to a point offense drop. The secondary could be weaker, and the pass rush might be a bit down. There’s enough roster and coaching continuity to make UTSA the slight AAC favorite.
10-2 is possible, but they could lose the non-conference Texas St game, and in addition to a loss at Texas, 6-2 is possible in conference play. Beat Memphis and they make the title game, likely with at least a 9-3 record.

2024 UTSA Football Schedule and Games to Watch
UTSA’s game at Texas St will determine if the Roadrunners start 3-1 or 2-2. They beat Texas St 20-13 last year at home, but these teams look very evenly matched to start this season.
Conference play begins at East Carolina. Last year was probably a blip on the radar for the Pirates, but UTSA will be the road favorite. UTSA will also be favored at Rice and at Tulsa. Go 2-1 in these road games and UTSA will be 3-1 before their last true test, a host of Memphis.
UTSA beat Memphis 31-28 at their place in ’21, but that was when UTSA resided in a different conference. Unless they falter at home vs. North Texas, the only other possible misstep would be at Army. In a non-conference game, UTSA won at Army in overtime in ’22.
