UVA College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Virginia is 3-12 in conference play under Tony Elliott, and 4-16 SU in lined games. 33 coaching changes were made this season. I
If this doesn’t turn around in year #3, Elliott may be the latest victim of the “win now” mentality in college football.
2024 UVA NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
To Elliott’s credit, he’s sticking with all three coordinators. Last year’s rush ratio was 3.35-5.45, and that is not a winning formula. The pass D% was average, and while kicking was solid (18-21) the unit as a whole was not solid, as evidenced by a porous net punting ratio and a below par return game. Both QB’s return, but need to up their game.
The OL failed to open up run holes while allowing 43 sacks. The OL looks better this year but the RB unit looks average at best. I’m expecting “solid” improvement vs. the run, but my 4.5 per carry projection is still below average.
The Cavaliers had 11 defensive sacks in ’23. This is my #1 area to watch in ’24.
UVA Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
The floor is 2-10, and it happens if they can’t win some key strategically placed games. A win at Coastal triggers a big advantage vs. Boston College.
Conversely, a loss here, and especially hosting Boston College could trigger another home loss, and once again a 3rd straight season of no home field edges. I’m calling this a 5-7 ceiling, with 4-8 the most likely result for now. This is an incredibly important year for the staff, and the coordinators must prove their worth in year #3.

2024 UVA Football Schedule and Games to Watch
The opener vs. 9-4 Richmond must be a win. If not, this could be a long season. The underdog is 8-1 ATS in the last nine games vs. Wake. Maybe that road game is a tossup. Maryland has a bottom tier Head Coach, but is better athletically. This is a home game, but what if this coach is not any better? Coastal lost 30 seniors from last year’s 8-5 squad. Virginia has 27-24 revenge game #5 vs. Boston College. That’s five “winnable” games, but not one of them is a guarantee.
With six of their final games being vs. tougher opponents (the 7th is at Pittsburgh), Virginia needs early success to have a shot at a bowl game. Virginia is just 2-8 SU at home vs. lined opponents. Early home losses could lead to fan apathy.
Keep that in mind. It’s at this point (if not sooner) that we’ll know if the pass rush has improved, and if QB play has improved. Opportunity exists for this team to improve in year #3, but if the stat sheet doesn’t show it, things could get ugly for UVA.
UVA 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
Last year I said that I’m in no hurry to back this team. They amazingly went 7-4 ATS, and I was a proud 0-0 in their games.
I’ll go underdog or pass 9/7 hosting Wake, take Virginia vs. Boston College if the Cavs are off a SU win, and lean vs. with a reasonable line at Notre Dame on 11/16, with that game the 2nd in a row on the road for this less than stellar team.
I’m also okay fading UVA at home if they continue to underachieve as a home team.
