Vanderbilt College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Vanderbilt’s stat sheet isn’t pretty. They are 12-69 the last decade inside the SEC, with Clark Lea 2-22. He’s 9-27 here, with his top two wins outside of the SEC by three at 3-9 Colorado State and by two over a then 1-11 UConn. Is this his final chance?
2024 Vanderbilt NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
Much like New Mexico a year ago (brought in UAB’s QB and coordinator), Vanderbilt poached New Mexico State.
QB Pavia was electric, running and passing the Aggies to an amazing season. His coordinator is now here, and Jerry Kill, the former New Mexico Head Coach is here as a consultant. The lead RB returns, but he had modest stats. The WR and TE units are the worst in the SEC, and that’s an issue. The OL looks a bit more cohesive.
Vanderbilt allowed nearly 40 points per game in the SEC, 6.15 yards-per-carry, and over 71% to opposing QB’s. They had 12 defensive sacks in SEC play. Vanderbilt can’t blame turnovers, as they were just -1 in SEC play. Purdue, TCU and Wyoming supply the three transfer starters. Any improvement isn’t likely to be dramatic. The entire special team unit is gone! Where’s the good news?
Vanderbilt Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
3-9, and a coaching change. It could be worse, but I like the potential at QB, and the offensive coaching staff is an upgrade. If they do have some win chances, let’s hope the new PK can deliver.

2024 Vanderbilt Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Assuming a loss hosting Virginia Tech, the next two opponents have new staffs. Alcorn State went 7-4, and host Georgia State is projected to win 4.5 games this season.
For the coach to have a shot at survival, this needs to be a 2-0 sweep. The other non-conference game is 10/19, hosting Ball State. Mike Neu is a repeater on my bottom five coaches list.
Clark Lea makes his debut this season. Which coach prevails? The only SEC team Vanderbilt plays who had a losing record a year ago is South Carolina. They are 2-11 SU hosting the Gamecocks, but their Head Coach has had road game issues (38-27 win at Vanderbilt in ’22). The only other “winnable” game in my eyes is the finale hosting Tennessee.
The Vols are a clearly superior team, but what if they have nothing to play for but a minor bowl bid? Vanderbilt is 3-14 SU as a host in this series, so no, this is not a great shot at victory, but at least there’s some shot if the conditions are right.
Vanderbilt 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
Vanderbilt has had trouble at home vs. the spread, and counting an 0-3 ATS mark vs. FCS teams, now stand at 4-15 ATS at home. Despite large spreads, Vanderbilt is a play against team when not a rush pick (17-9 ATS, 3-1 in ’23). I’ll clearly chart the offense in September, but I don’t expect to be endorsing Vanderbilt on too many plays in ’24.
