Virginia Tech College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Brent Pry started his career 2-8, with one of those wins coming vs Wofford 27-7 (favored by 38). Tech went 6-6 (7-6 counting a bowl victory) last year, but that included a 5-3 mark down the stretch, all in the ACC.
This team is getting a lot of love entering ’24. Let’s see if the hype is well-founded.
2024 Virginia Tech NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
In a rarity, EVERY offensive starter returns from last year. QB Drones had a 17-3 ratio and can run as well. As long as he stays healthy this unit should continue to improve.
My run projection is 5.05 per carry. I like the group, but it’s not at or near the top of the ACC. OL continuity however, cannot be overstated. Nine of their top 12 tacklers return. Tech looks average in the trenches, but should improve defending the pass.
Defensive sacks rose from 23 (in 11 games) to 39 (in 13 games). Any drop in pass pressure should be minimal. The PK was 22-24. The pieces are there for continued improvement.

8-4, and with so much returning talent, that really should be the floor.
I think they “only” start 3-1, and I have them at 5-3 in the ACC. Run only QB Schlee (UCLA) is the backup in case Drones gets hurt. There’s a path to the ACC title game as long as they go at least 1-1 in games at Miami and home to Clemson. 7-5 would be a letdown in ’24.

2024 Virginia Tech Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Virginia Tech should be favored in games 1-4, all of the non-conference variety. Marshall beat them 24-17 last year, while Rutgers won 35-24.
Both rematches are at home. ACC play begins with road games at Miami (home loss in ’22) and at Stanford (1st ever road game in California other than a bowl game). These are winnable games, but a loss in either one would not surprise me.
Given their experience, Tech might have some hopes of challenging for a spot in the ACC title game. Winning home games vs. Boston College and Georgia Tech become essential in that quest, but the underdog has been the way to go in Georgia Tech games. Virginia Tech hasn’t played at old time Big East rival Syracuse since ’16.
I’ll pre-check how Syracuse and their new staff has been faring at home, and check my stat projections to what they’ve accomplished. That’s always the right thing to do when trying to project #’s for new coaching staffs.
Regardless of the outcome in that game, I think VT can put up a good fight hosting Clemson the following week.
These teams haven’t played since Covid, ’20, a year when VT’s roster was affected more than any other team in the NCAA. Closing games are at Duke and home to Virginia, a team they’ve dominated. What’s the mindset after playing and hosting Clemson?

My 1st thought is going underdog only 10/26 vs. GT. If the stat sheet agrees, I’m interested in backing VT when they host Clemson on 11/9.
