Wake Forest College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Is Wake about to be passed over in the ACC?  Dave Clawson built this program the right way, but with NIL and the transfer portal out of control (no boundaries) schools like this one are now seeing their best players poached by the bigger programs (Sam Hartman for example). 

Maybe last year’s 4-8 record was just a temporary setback, as Wake had six straight winning seasons before that, not counting Covid ’20.  How will this season play out?   

2024 Wake Forest NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

QB Mitch Griffis wasn’t the answer last year (and his prop projections were incredibly out of line – insert smile here).  In comes Hank Bachmeier, who has plenty of starting experience, but the won-loss record has been a bit disappointing. 

Wake has never been a dynamite run team, but there could be some potential in the room (I project an uptick to 3.9 per carry).  Pass protection has been dismal, and Wake allowed 49 sacks in ’23.  At best, this unit will only slightly improve. 

Last year’s defensive #’s showed 4.45 per carry allowed and 61.6% allowed in the pass game.  Both figures were slightly worse as compared to my projections (4.4/59.5%).  This is a senior-laden DL that should improve in ’24, and it better improve, as the secondary is weaker.  PK Dennis regressed last year but could get back his ’22 form.

5-7, and this could be high if QB Bachmeier is unable to up his game, if the DL can’t compensate for what I expect to be a below par secondary, and/or if the kicking game stays the same as it did in ’23. 

I love the stability Head Coach Clawson brings to the table, but he’ll have to get the most out of the average group of players currently in the program.

2024 Wake Forest Football Schedule and Games to Watch

Why do I make projected stats?  Wake went 3-0 vs. Elon, Vandy and ODU a year ago, but a look at their stat sheet showed them underachieving.  QB play was average, and the rush ratio was shockingly poor.  When compared to what I felt would be appropriate #’s, Wake was below par. 

Other people saw 3-0.  I saw a flawed team.  This year’s early schedule is tougher, with Virginia and Mississippi coming to Wake in weeks 2/3.  Given the host history, I expect a week five loss at NC St.  Wake has lost their last 15 games vs. Clemson. 

Clemson will have already been on the road, playing at rival FSU.  The spread history is 50-50, but maybe this is their best opportunity to make some noise.  Road games follow at UConn and Stanford.  Unless I see something special from their stat sheet, 1-1 is the ceiling here. 

Wake will need to be at least 4-4 to have a decent shot at going to a bowl game.  The November games are hosting Cal (50-50), at North Carolina (30-70), at Miami (probably 25% at best SU, but check Miami’s current motivation), and home to Duke (unknown right now).
