Wake Forest Football Preview 2023: Wake Forest Picks for Betting

Dave Clawson has built this program the right way. 

The 2022 record was “only” 7-5, plus a bowl win, but there were unforeseen obstacles right away, with QB Hartman undergoing a serious emergency procedure.  Hartman leaves, creating a void, and the defense has work to do.  It’s back to the underdog role in 2023.

Wake Forest Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Sam Hartman will be tough to replace.  The new QB will need help from a run game which struggled a year ago but has returning talent.  The OL allowed 36 sacks a year ago and returns only two starters. 

Their coordinator has done a great job over the years but this year presents some challenges.  Brad Lambert made my “coveted” bottom five head coaches list, but has had some solid seasons as a defensive coordinator. 

His initial season here was not quite up to par, although the run defense was better than what I expected (4.05-143).  Wake closed ACC play by allowing 35 points per game to five decent, but not spectacular bowl teams.  The front four has some holes to fill, so that run defense may regress.  Their new PK was accurate, but just 2-4 from beyond 35 yards.

Wake Forest 2023 Predictions, Wake Forest Schedule:

Wake certainly eases into the season with games vs. Elon, Vandy, (at) ODU and Georgia Tech.  Winning can be contagious, and despite roster changes, a 4-0 start could lead to overachieving. 

I’ll be looking closely at the stat sheet to see if the record does not match their true talent.  Wake also has two weeks before facing Clemson, a team that has dominated the Demon Deacons. 

I’ll pre-check VT’s home record prior to that matchup.  Pitt is dangerous. 

For Wake to win, OL play needs to improve.  FSU is considered a potential top ten team this year, but has had trouble beating Wake.  My pre-check will be to see if FSU is doing a better job at closing games out this season. 

It’s a short week after that as they head to play Duke.  This will be a data check game, as I won’t veer much from ’23 results in deciding who might be the better team.  Wake has a better than average opportunity to win hosting NC State.  Even at 4-0, this might be needed for win number 6.  Following a tough game at Notre Dame, Wake closes the season at Syracuse.  What’s Wake’s motivation for this one?

Wake Forest Football Bottom Line: Total Wins

6-6 or 7-5?  QB play likely regresses, and I’m not sure I trust the OL to vastly improve.  That puts extra pressure on what looks to be a rebuilt DL. 

Clawson will find a way to steal a win and get them to a bowl, but on paper, this does not look like a very dynamic team.  Let’s see if a projected 4-0 start can change the narrative.
