Wake Forest vs NC State Predictions

  • Wake Forest Demon Deacons -2 vs North Carolina State Wolfpack
  • Total: 66.5 Points
  • North Carolina State is 6-2 against the spread in the Wolfpack’s last eight games as an underdog.
  • Wake Forest is 8-1 against the spread in the Demon Deacons’ last nine ACC home games.

I had a monster NCAA Football Week 10 going 4-0-1 on the college gridiron and we are off to a big start in Week 11 with Miami (OH) steamrolling Buffalo on Tuesday night. The final couple weeks of the NCAA Football regular season can be a minefield with plenty of meaningless games and teams dealing with injuries and players starting to sit out but we will still isolate some good spots and I’ve found one I want to move on here as we head to the ACC where the #16 Wake Forest Demon Deacons take on the #16 NC State Wolfpack at Truist Field in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

I cashed a 4% BEST BET going against Wake Forest last week and, due to the manner in which they lost that game, I love the spot to go against Wake Forest here. This is the “Dream Crusher” scenario to a “T”, fading teams that fall into this spot has been profitable over the years and I expect it to be profitable again here. Wake Forest entered play last week 8-0 with a game against 4-4 North Carolina where, had they won, they would have had to believe winning out would have given them a legitimate chance at making the College Football Playoff. Halfway through the third quarter Wake Forest led by 18 and had to think they had the game won, thus, one step closer to the College Football Playoff. That all wasn’t to be, North Carolina came roaring back to go up two scores in what eventually finished a 58-55 North Carolina win. The ACC isn’t very strong this season which means one loss is a death sentence for Wake Forest, even winning out wouldn’t put the Demon Deacons in the CFP at this point and because of that the dream is over and could cause Wake to come out flat here.

Another reason I love NC State in this spot is I really do think the Wolfpack are the better football team. NC State enters play 7-2, unlike Wake Forest the Wolfpack actually went out and played someone legitimate in non-conference play and lost a tough road game to a very good Mississippi State team. NC State also lost 31-30 to a Miami (FL) team that has improved big time and it was a game the Wolfpack probably should have won. NC State knocked off Clemson while the Tigers were still a Top 10 team and throttled Florida State in Tallahassee last week so I think a case can be made that the Wolfpack, despite having an extra loss, have the more impressive resume. NC State is outstanding defensively, the Wolfpack are allowing just 16 points per game this season and are far better than any defense Wake Forest has faced in the past month. Wake Forest has an elite offense but North Carolina started to figure out how to get stops last week so I expect NC State to find ways to stop the Demon Deacons as well. The ONLY reason Wake Forest is where they are right now is the offense and if they aren’t scoring drive in and drive out I just don’t see how the Demon Deacons put up the points they will need to win here.

The reason Wake Forest needs to score a bunch of points to win (just about any game) is their defense is horrific. I was at the Army/Wake Forest game, the entire stadium knew Army was going to run and Wake Forest gave up over 400 rushing yards and 56 points. Wake has been gashed by numerous teams on the ground this season and the only thing this Demon Deacons defense does even remotely well is force turnovers, which will be difficult to do against NC State since the Wolfpack have turned it over just seven times all season. NC State’s offense is led by quarterback Devin Leary who is having an outstanding season so far with 2,475 yards passing, 25 touchdowns and just three interceptions. NC State might not have the huge offensive outputs that Wake Forest does but this Wolfpack team is fully capable of moving the ball and controlling time of possession here. NC State should have no issues scoring against a Wake Forest defense that hasn’t been able to stop teams like North Carolina, Army, Syracuse and Louisville. I’ll argue that NC State is better than all four of those teams, the Wolfpack can do it on both sides of the ball while Wake cannot and that’s going to be the difference as NC State does enough to maintain the upper hand and leave Winston-Salem with a win here. Play on NC State +1.5 (-110) for 4% (or 4 units).

Wake Forest vs NC State Analysis from The GoldSheet

It looks like basketballl season has come a bit early at Wake Forest, as the Deacs have been posting recent scorelines (70-56, 55-58) that look more like they come from Steve Forbes’ hoopsters. Unfortunately, defensive shortcomings helped put the sword to Wake’s best start since 1944 when the Deacs couldn’t hold an 18-point lead well in the second half at Chapel Hill. NC State’s Devin Leary (quietly having a breakout sophomore campaign with 25 TD passes and only three interceptions) might be able to do what Sam Howell and friends did to Dave Clawson’s defense last week.
