Washington College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Kalen Deboer hit the ground running with Washington (Wash) and never let up. There were close calls. They beat Oregon on a fluke (bad decision-making). The survived vs. OSU when the Beavers (likely intentionally) held out players from the game in the 4th quarter.
A missed WSU PK and a made Husky PK at the buzzer won the Apple Cup. They upset Oregon again to make the playoffs. The offense was electric. Deboer leaves, and the roster will be much different in ’24.
2024 Washington NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
It’s not a case of who left (10 drafted, 7 in the 1st three rounds), but who is left? Every offensive starter is gone.
Will Rodgers has thrown for over 12,000 yards. I expect 67% accuracy here. RB Coleman comes with new coach Fisch and he’s a more than capable starter. WR Hunter (Cal) has NFL talent. The OL is mostly untested, with two starters having never played, and even the transfer from Ohio State has but two starts in five seasons. Injuries would be crippling to this offense.
Steve Belichick is the new defensive coordinator. I have no idea how that will work out. The DL is all new, with two key transfers (Montana State, Arizona) having starting experience. I’m keeping the run D flat (4.5 per carry) but of course that will be monitored. The LB unit has one returning starter, with one other player with starting experience.
Two starters return to the secondary, along with a former Arizona starter. Washington was a middle of the pack (PAC 12) defense a year ago and could earn similar status now. The kicking game IS in good hands.
Washington Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
7-5 (grid at 6.75). That’s UNDER 7.5 wins, which I have some tickets on, but a little too close for comfort after doing this write-up. For those with under 7 tickets, I think it’s worth keeping.
The road schedule is hard. I like parts of this team (backfield, possibly the back seven, PK), but the OL is new, the DL is new, and depth is lacking. I’ll be watching Belichick’s impact closely, and how all my projected numbers are faring.

2024 Washington Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Weber State was 6-5 last year. This opener might be interesting (blowout or tossup, I’ll get info from the result). The game vs. WSU is in Seattle.
The Cougars should have insisted they come to Pullman, as it was their turn to host. 4-0, and perhaps infectious confidence is clearly possible before they head to Rutgers. I’m bearish on the Rutgers QB, but my pre-study is all about Washington’s defense, as I think the Husky offense will get their 1st real test.
Can you call it (title game) revenge when both Washington and Michigan have new staffs, and almost all new starters? The tougher game is next, at Iowa. With such massive change, it’s likely not a good thing that the Huskies have yet to have a week off.
That comes next, which avoids fatigue when they return to the road to face Indiana, a team that has a wide range of outcomes for ’24. November is tough. They host USC (tossup), travel to Penn State (likely a loss), host UCLA (should be a win) and close at revenge-minded Oregon.
Washington Huskies 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
I will likely take the plunge and take Weber State in the opener, but then I’ll adjust, if necessary, after that. The road schedule scares me, and I could see more fades, especially if the stat sheet is not up to speed vs. the easier teams on the schedule (they may be winning, but the stat results may mask true performance).
