Neal Brown hasn’t delivered like I (or they) thought he would.  I like him as a coach, but he’s 22-25 here, and the seat is getting hot.  Killing this program are all the transfers out. 

If allowed to build the program, Brown might have thrived, especially with Texas and Oklahoma out of the picture after this season.  Will he still be here after this season ends?

West Virginia Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

The new offensive coordinator is Chad Scott, and that scares me.  The run game and OL are solid, but I’m still lowering my projection from last year’s 4.85 per carry. 

More than anything, the pass game scares me.  Returning QB Greene had a mediocre debut and the backups are untested. 

No one returns from the pass catching group.  Defensively, DT looks weaker, and CB size is another concern.  The talent level isn’t bad, but it is just treading water.  The return game looks mediocre at best, while a ‘decent” transfer PK must fill the shoes of their departed guy, who was nearly automatic, but lacked a strong leg (long of 38).

West Virginia 2023 Predictions, West Virginia Schedule:

The non-conference record will be 2-1 or 1-2 depending on how they fare hosting Pittsburgh.  Anything less than a split of games vs. Texas Tech and at Houston would be a setback. 

The next three games present more win opportunities.  They get extra time before facing Oklahoma Stsate (no home wins), travel to UCF and host BYU.  A 2-1 outcome may be the minimum necessary to have a shot at a bowl berth. 

Road games at Oklahoma and Baylor are tough, with both teams seeking revenge.  On 11/18 they host Cincy.  I’ll clearly pre-check WV’s home performance prior to this one.

West Virginia Football Bottom Line:

I’m rooting for Neal, but unless something changes, I don’t see the offense under Chad Scott making a major difference. 

With a potentially weaker DL, that could cause some problems.  This looks like 5-7, which will make for an interesting discussion about the future of the coaching staff.  This is one example of a program that has been negatively affected by the portal.

West Virginia Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

My 13-0 ATS run ended with a thud last year (1-4).  I lean West Virginia hosting Pitt if games 1-2 are not cause for concern, but lean vs. hosting OK St if WVU is favored. 

I’ll wait otherwise, but might lean vs. if things are slipping away late in the season.
