Wisconsin Football Preview 2023: The Overview

There are times I hate College Football.  I’ve been doing this for 45 years and the ride has been fantastic.  But the “business” of the NCAA is wearing on me. 

Paul Chryst (67-26) had four double-digit win seasons, and only once did he have fewer than six conference wins (Covid N/A). 

Last year, Wisconsin started 2-3, and Chryst was fired.  Yes, I understand they had high hopes for a transition to Jim Leonhard, and YES, I understand that Luke Fickell is probably a coaching upgrade, but the message is horrible.  Wisconsin finished 7-6, and the maniac fan base is excited.  What’s in store for 2023?

Wisconsin Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH, Betting Insights

The offense is about to change.  Phil Longo coached effectively at UNC and will likely incorporate more passing into an offense famous for producing elite RB’s and even more elite run-blocking OL.  SMU QB Mordecai fits the new scheme, so my big question is this: How fast can the OL adapt to new blocking schemes? 

Star RB Allen decided to return and that’s a good thing.  In fact, ten starters return so this offense could be dangerous.  Defensive coordinator Leonhard didn’t do enough in his interim stint to win the main job and he’ll be missed on his side of the ball. 

Mike Tressel joins Fickell again for this move, and the transition could be relatively seamless.  Wisconsin’s run defense numbers have been outstanding for years. 

The DL has plenty of talent and should still be tough to run on.  I expect a minor drop vs. the pass.  Nate Herbig had 11 of the team’s 32 sacks a year ago, and the number two guy also is gone to the NFL.  I’ll watch the pass pressure early and often for this year.

Wisconsin 2023 Predictions, Wisconsin Schedule and Obstacles:

If Wisconsin can make amends for losing at home last year to WSU then they will enter Big Ten play at 3-0.  With games 4-5 at Purdue and home to Rutgers, 5-0 is in play.  The talent level is there to make that a reality, but I wonder about the OL transition and the pass rush. 

On 10/14 they host Iowa.  The winner of this game might be the early favorite to reach the Big Ten title game.  Illinois blasted Wisconsin last year, causing Chryst’s firing.  It’s not a true “revenge” game with a whole new staff, but it’s still an important road game for the Badgers. 

Wisconsin has lost their last nine games vs. Ohio State.  Maybe this is interesting with Fickell facing his former team, but I’ll pre-check how the aerial game transition is going, and how the defensive numbers are faring. 

November games are at Indiana, home to Northwestern and Nebraska, and at Minnesota (Minnesota 2-0 last two).  A 3-1 close should be expected, unless this is more of a transition year than originally thought.

Wisconsin Football Bottom Line: Total Expected Wins Over/Under

9-3.  The WSU game comes up a bit too early, and while Ohio St could be a great emotional upset for Fickell, it’s best to consider it a loss for now.  I don’t expect 3-0 in games hosting Iowa, and Illinois and at Minnesota. 

The business (and ruthless) side of football is over.  Fickell looks like a solid hire.  I visited Madison this July and walked on their storied field, which was in immaculate condition.  Let’s see how crazy the fans get this upcoming season.

Here’s another team where long-time situations are temporally suspended.  With so many positive vibes about the staff, we could see some spread inflate at times when not warranted.  I’ll watch the run-pass balance before acting further.
