Wisconsin College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

In Luke Fickell’s initial season Wisconsin went 7-5, which seemed about right.  A deeper dive showed the Badgers losing four times when favored, and the spreads were not low ones (favored by 5.5, 9, 9.5 and 12).  The schedule ramps up in ’24, but it’s year #2, so improvement is expected. 

2024 Wisconsin NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

Fickell had Wisconsin transition to less reliance on the power run, and had mixed reviews in ’23.  Tyler Van Dyke has a wide range of potential outcomes, as the streaky QB can be turnover-prone.  RB Allen is gone, but the attack is still above average. 

The defense lost ground vs. the run last year.  I think it will remain average in ’24.  Seven of the top eight DB’s return.  If not for the schedule (see below), the stat sheet would show improvement.  Most of the special team units are good, but a new return man is needed.

I’ll call this a soft 8-4 (grid says 7-5).  Reasons to like them, even with the upgraded schedule are an improved pass game, a solid secondary, a good PK, and year #2 for the staff.

2024 Wisconsin Football Schedule and Games to Watch

In the addition to the schedule ramp up, concerns include a spike in QB interceptions and a modest run defense.  Real progress might be a year away, but in this day and age, that means yet another QB transfer.  

Alabama is added to the non-conference schedule, while USC, Penn State and Oregon replace Indiana, Ohio State and Illinois on the Big Ten docket.  South Dakota was 10-3 a year ago.  Is this a lookahead spot, with Alabama on deck? 

NCAA teams get two bye weeks this calendar year.  Wisconsin is one of many who have put the byes into good use, as there’s a break between Alabama and going to USC.  From 10/12 on out, the schedule is rough.  Until Wisky peaks, it’s a likely split of road games at Rutgers and Northwestern. 

I’ll call 10/26 a tossup, as road team Penn State will be rested.  Games against Iowa are always tossups.  A rested Badger team hosts Oregon next.  After going just 4-3 at home in ’23, can the Badgers establish more of a home presence in ’24 against some tough opponents?  Wisconsin closes at Nebraska and home to Minny.  They beat both teams a year ago (Nebraska in overtime), but have had only mixed recent success vs. the Gophers.  

Wisconsin Badgers 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

Wisky could become a play on team with the rush data in their favor thanks to the tough schedule. 

I’ll lean vs. 9/7 hosting South Dakota, but hope to back them 9/21 vs. Alabama.  I’ll look dog only 11/9 vs. Iowa, hoping for rush stat alignment.  I’m concerned that their season won’t be fluid, mostly due to the ebbs and flows I expect with QB Van Dyke.
