Wyoming Football Preview 2023: Wyoming Picks for Betting

Wyoming is strange.  They’ve had no losing seasons (Covid excluded) since ’15.  They’ve had good to great QB’s but even 56% is a remarkable achievement. 

Their Power Rating never gets very high, no matter what the record has been over the past decade and more.  Conservative in nature, it seems like they play to their location, which gets awfully cold late in the year.  Will they ever be willing to break the mold and take a chance?

Wyoming Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

The 1^st thing that jumps out to me is their clearly bottom level recruiting rating.  Maybe this is a tough place to recruit, but winning hasn’t made things any better.  The forward pass will remain a challenge in 2023.  With uncertainly at RB and WR, how does the offense improve? 

The OL limits sacks, but only two starters return.  They ran 5.3 per carry last year but my projection now is at 4.4.  Ten starters return defensively.  The DL looks good, so maybe their 4.6 and 4.4 per carry rush defense over the past two seasons can improve some more.  Their PK was 22-25 a year ago.

Wyoming 2023 Predictions, Wyoming Schedule:

Wyoming will be anywhere from 3-1 to 1-3 prior to conference play depending on how they fare hosting Texas Tech and Appalachian State.  Fresno has had their way vs. the Cowboys, but I’ll see how their new QB is faring prior to this home game. 

Wyoming is 0-8 straight up at Boise, but 7-1 vs. the spread.  Maybe having a week off can help (Boise off as well however).  Wyoming lucked out in their win at Colorado State a year ago.  The rematch is at home, but interestingly enough, the Cowboys haven’t been a home dominant team. 

Could Wyoming close 3-0 (at UNLV, Hawaii, at Nevada)?  They could be favored in all three, but the Cowboys are 11-33 vs. the spread as a road favorite, so the margin between an outright win or loss is not that large.

Wyoming Football Bottom Line:

7-5 last year exceeded my expectations.  Unlike other Mountain West teams, Wyoming looks improved except at RB, although QB play experience does not mean QB efficiency in their case. 

7-5 has to be the floor (grid says 7-5), and 8-4 with a win vs. Fresno could get them close to a rare title game invitation (lost to SD St ’16).  Is there any way the offense can contribute?  I’ll chart this side of the ball early and often for clues.

Wyoming Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

Rush data was only 2-4 a year ago but has worked to the tune of 70% the previous ten seasons.  They have enough experience to overcome their poor road favorite record but I won’t rush to test this out without good statistical data in their favor. 

I’d consider them if a home dog vs. Appalachian State, and will use line-setting clues to see about backing Wyoming at Boise.
