Daytona 500 Recap

NASCAR’s super-speedways are known for producing “the big one,” and Monday’s Daytona 500 was no exception. A crash with nine laps to go took out almost half the field, including Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin.

Hendrick Motorsports earned a 1-2 finish with William Byron taking the checkered flag ahead of teammate Alex Bowman. At DraftKings, Byron was available at 18-to-1 prior to the race. The late-race crashes allowed some lesser-known drivers like Corey Lajoie, John Hunter Nemecheck and Noah Gragson to crash the party in the top-10.

NCAAB Close Game Report for Monday, February 19

• Houston closed -8 or -8.5 at most ‘books against Iowa State and won 73-65. Down by ten with under 30 seconds remaining, Iowa State’s Curtis Jones made a pair of not-so-meaningless free throws.
• Norfolk State opened as a 4.5-point home favorite against NC Central and closed at -7 or -7.5 at most shops. The Spartans won 80-74.

NCAAB Upset Report for Monday, February 19

Not many!

• Significant money came in on SE Louisiana yesterday after the Lions opened as a pick’em against Lamar, but got bet all the way up to -5 at some books. Lamar won 77-72 in overtime.

The Ice Report for Monday, February 19

• The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 as a +175 underdog.
• The Ottawa Senators defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 as a +145 underdog.
• Minnesota became the third team in the last three days to score at least nine goals in a game as the Wild beat Vancouver 10-7. The total for this game closed at 6 at most shops. These teams hit that mark with nine minutes remaining in the second period.

646 Boise State -15.5 vs San Jose State

The big story to keep an eye on here is the health of SJSU point guard Alvaro Cardenas, who unexpectedly missed Saturday’s contest with Wyoming. The Spartans already have one of the shortest benches in the country, and losing your starting point guard is a recipe for disaster in the Mountain West. Cardenas is expected to return tonight, but if he is/was battling an illness, that opens up the question of, “Who else got sick?” Boise State is coming off a 24-point thrashing of Fresno State and the Broncos have the ability to do the same against SJSU if the Spartans are short-handed on Tuesday night. Four Boise starters scored 12+ points in that 90-66 wire-to-wire win over the Bulldogs where the Broncos never trailed. SJSU’s defense is allowing conference opponents to shoot 42.2-percent from three-point range. In conference play, the Spartans’ defense is bottom-2 in the league in efficiency, effective field goal defense, forcing turnovers, allowing free throws and three-point defense. If Cardenas is limited in any capacity, Boise State should roll to another easy win.
