Formula 1 Handicapping

With Formula 1 announcing plans to race in Las Vegas in November 2023, motor racing popularity is at an all-time high. While you certainly don’t need to have a wager to enjoy the world’s fastest sport, it certainly doesn’t hurt either. WagerTalk handicapper Kevin Dolan shares some notes on the various Formula 1 betting markets.

What Exactly is Formula 1?

In this article we’re going to cover what exactly Formula 1 is, what’s changed ahead of the 2022 season, and the best markets to target when looking to place a wager on the sport. Let’s get into it.

Formula 1 is the world’s fastest regulated motorsport with cars reaching in excess of 360 km per hour. While other motorsports boast a similar level of speed overall, what really separates Formula 1 is in it’s cornering and acceleration, with cars going from 0-100 in just 2.6 seconds and generating up to a whopping 6.5 G on corners as well.

Current owners Liberty Media who bought out Formula 1 in 2017 and who also own a controlling stake in Sirius XM Radio and the Atlanta Braves as well, have done a good job of pushing Formula 1’s brand over the last few years. Netflix’s Drive to Survive series has been a huge hit on streaming services, and the circuit is now looking to hold three races in the United States with the 2023 Vegas race joining Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas and the new Miami Grand Prix debuting in May 2022.

What’s New in 2022?

Apart from the inaugural Miami Grand Prix, there’s been a number of changes to car regulations this year, including frozen power units and aerodynamic testing limits in order to even out the competitive playing field.

Along with those, new tire regulations and a budget cap for all teams should ensure this is one of the most competitive seasons yet and no more so than right at the top of the field.

Head-to-Head Betting Market

Similar to golf, head-to-head markets (provided you can find them) offer a much more viable alternative to the often volatile outright winner market. With over 20 drivers in the race, a single mistake, badly executed pit-stop or unforced error from another chasing driver can mean the odds offered for the outright market don’t always reflect the best value for bettors.

Podium Finishes

On top of the head-to-head markets, another good strategy when betting Formula 1 is to look at the top-six and top-ten (points) markets, where you can often find good value on drivers who have been solid on a particular track or drivers currently flying under-the-radar outside of the media spotlight.

With the field narrowing in terms of overall competitiveness in 2022, top-ten bets may well end up being the best market to cash tickets this season.

Formula 1 Prop Bets

Caution flags are not as prevalent in Formula 1 as they are in NASCAR, but most sports books will offer a “Safety Car” prop bet. You are betting into a yes/no market of whether or not a safety car will be needed during the race.

The final market strategy that usually offers solid value is the over/under classified cars market where, similar to a total in any other sport, you’re basically wagering on how many cars will end up finishing the race. On new circuits or tracks offering volatile weather conditions, this can often be one of the more profitable markets to target when betting on Formula 1.
