Previous Masters Winners

The 2022 Masters will take place April 7-10 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Matsuyama captured last year’s tournament with a final score of -10, defeating Will Zalatoris by one shot and the duo of Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth by three shots.

What common bonds do previous Masters winners share? From Today’s Golfer: Over two-thirds of the last 30 champions had made the top-10 at the Masters least once before, while seven of the last nine winners finished fifth or better at a previous Masters.

While familiarity with Augusta National is important, the Masters has produced numerous first-time major winners recently. Several players, including Matsuyama last year, have picked up their first major championship at the Masters over the last decade.

Although it’s fun to toss a couple bucks on some longshots, they don’t cash at the Masters very often. The last 12 winners at Augusta have all been ranked in the top-30. Since the World Rankings were created, just two of the last 36 winners of the Masters – Zach Johnson in 2007 and Angel Cabrera in 2009 – sat outside the top-40 when they won.

Augusta National is a course that demands precision iron play and a very strong short game. Because of that, only the best in the world truly contend here and longshot winners are generally few and far between.

Augusta has made some subtle changes prior to this year’s tournament. Hole No. 11 was lengthened by 15 yards to 520 yards, which is a ridiculous length for a par-4. The par-5 15th, which traditionally has been one of the easiest holes on the course, was lengthened by 20 yards to 550 yards. The long hitters may have more of an advantage here now as less players will be able to get home in two.

Wind will be a factor this week as will some cold temperatures. The most favorable scoring round looks to be Thursday morning. Rain and thunderstorms are expected to roll in on Wednesday, which could lead to soft conditions before winds pick up on Thursday afternoon through Saturday.

The overnight low on Wednesday is also a balmy 66 degrees while Thursday night dips into the 40s making those early Friday rounds that much more difficult. Those overnight temps hold true over the weekend as well but what’s important is figuring out the possible draw advantage on Thursday and Friday. Right now, that fully appears to be Thursday AM and Friday PM, but to what extent remains unknown.
