PGA Tour Rewind

Last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge ended with another win from a player ranked inside the top-10 of Total Strokes Gained over the last six month as Sam Burns defeated Scottie Scheffler in a playoff.

Most people had already handed Scheffler the title after he built a two-stroke lead heading into the final round but with conditions as tough as they were, he went backwards enough for Sam Burns to force a playoff. That makes three wins for Burns on the season as he is the only contender to Scottie’s Player of the Year honor at this point in the season.

Memorial Tournament Odds Board

We move on to Jack’s tournament at The Memorial, which will once again be another very tough four days as players gear up for the US Open in two weeks. Thirteen of 21 tournaments in 2022 have seen the winner come from the top-10 in Total Strokes Gained, so let’s once again start the hunt for this week’s winner with that list.

[#3] Cameron Smith +2.40 (+2200) DK

The Memorial Course and Field

Muirfield always slots in the schedule just a couple weeks prior to the US Open and serves as a great warm-up as the setup is very similar. Conditions can be very challenging with rough at four inches or more and greens regularly stimping at 13.

Last year, the course played a little slower as there were major renovations completed prior to the tournament. Now with a full year of growing, expect Muirfield to have its bite back.

The field is very strong like it is every year with seven of the top-10 in the field this year. Those missing include both playoff participants from Colonial last week, Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns, as well as the PGA Champion, Justin Thomas.

The story of this week will of course be Jon Rahm and how he performs. He won the event in 2020 by five shots (OK, technically it ended up being three shots after he was assessed a two-stroke penalty after his final round) and last year in defense, he built a six-shot lead heading into the final round, only to be pulled aside by PGA Tour officials after his 54th hole and told he tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to withdraw. He handled it like a true professional though and then went out and won the US Open just two weeks later, so perhaps the salt isn’t as deep in the wound.

This is the first event in several weeks in which the weather will not be a story. There is a chance of some lingering showers on Thursday morning, but after that, dry, temperatures in the 70s and hardly any wind. Even fair-weather golfers would be licking their chops this week.

Nick’s Betting Favorites

From Nick Borrman: Muirfield plays like a major and you can generally expect one of the best players on the planet to win. It’s no coincidence then that 17 of the past 29 Memorial champions have previously won a major championship. If it’s not a major champion, Muirfield demands a strong tee-to-green game so keep it to the short list of the purest ball strikers on Tour.

Shane Lowry +2500 (DK) | Top-10 +275 (Bet365)
Lowry has been one of the most consistent players in the world over the last six months. He has finished inside the top-25 in 11-straight stroke play events worldwide with nine of those inside the top-14. The only thing he hasn’t done is win, but it’s a matter of when, not if.

Lowry finished T6 in this event last year and has previously won in Ohio, winning at Firestone in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

I mentioned how important ball-striking is this week and Lowry has been great as he sits No. 8 in Strokes Ganined Approach thanks to ranking No. 3 in proximity to the hole. When he misses, few players are better as Lowry ranks No. 1 in scrambling and No. 10 in sand saves. All of this leads to the third-best scoring average on Tour this season. Again, it’s when, not if.

Matthew Fitzpatrick +2800 (FD) | Top-10 +300 (Bet365)
Speaking of ‘it’s only a matter of time’, Fitzy might fit the bill even more than Lowry. Fitzpatrick does have two missed cuts in his last six starts, but I’m not too worried as one was the horrible draw at The Players and the other was at the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters.

However, he has been showing up in the toughest events including a T5 at the PGA, T2 at the Wells Fargo, T14 at the Masters and T9 at Bay Hill. In fact, besides those two missed cuts, Fitzpatrick’s worst finish in his last 11 starts was that T14 at the Masters, otherwise he has finished top-10 in seven of those 11.

Fitzpatrick ranks inside the top-30 in all Strokes Gained categories including No. 13 off the tee, No. 11 around the green, No. 10 in putting which all leads to being No. 1 Total Strokes Gained this season with the fourth-best scoring average. Fitzy also has some decent history here with a third-place finish in 2020.

BEST BET Matt Kuchar Top-40 (-125 at Draftkings)
KOOOOCCCHHHH! is quietly playing some great golf with only one finish outside the top-40 in his last six starts including a T2 at the Valero and a T3 at the RBC Heritage. Kuchar did not make the limited field at the Masters but did have a solid tournament at the PGA finishing T34. He also started the season very well with five straight finishes inside the Top-40 in the fall with his only bad stretch of golf coming in February and early-March where he missed three of four cuts.

Kuchar doesn’t have the distance anymore, but he is still accurate, ranking No. 31 in driving accuracy and he is a short game wizard ranking No. 1 in Strokes Gained around the green as well as No. 13 in putting.

He missed the cut here last year but that snapped a streak 11-straight cuts made at Muirfield with his worst finish a T26 including a win among seven top-10s.
