2024 Genesis Scottish Open Course: The Renaissance Club – Golf Picks

This course was carved out of a pine forest so it’s not your typical links style course, and although most see this as a course to try and get ready for next week’s Open Championship, it doesn’t have a whole lot of similarities to Troon.

It’s a Par 70 at 7200 yards with 3 Par 5’s, and those Par 5’s are very gettable, and I would say mandatory to shoot -10 or better this week in order to have any chance at winning.

The course does feature deep pot bunkers, fairways/greens with mounds, and bumps, and some areas of deep rough, but this course is a cakewalk compared to what they will see next week.

The weather looks to be pretty good so we won’t see any gnarly weather like we did last year so expect a very low score to win.

2024 Genesis Scottish Open Favorite Holes

Hole 7: 561 Par 5

We should see Eagles on this hole as there isn’t much to it. Drive it to the right side of the fairway, and players will have the green light to hit the green easily in 2, but shots that come up short or left will create a tricky up-and-down which could lead to a Par score which is bad on this hole. Eagle or Birdie are the only acceptable scores on this hole.

Hole 13: 418 Par 4

I love this hole as it’s right along the sea with deep rough to the right of the fairway, and cliffs to the left. The fairway gets very narrow the farther the drive goes so players have a risk-reward situation off the tee. If the wind is kicking up, the approach shot is insanely difficult, but this year I don’t think it will be too troublesome. Approach shots that go left are a big no-no as the rough and coast will gobble up the shots leading to a big number.

Hole 18: 483 Par 4

Solid finishing hole here as there are stone walls in the middle of the fairway along with fairway bunkers so accuracy is key off the tee. The green isn’t that difficult, but up and downs are as both the left and right sides of the green have troublesome short shots.

2024 Genesis Scottish Open: Players That Can Trip You Up

Aaron Rai

He’s been a cash cow recently, but he’s now priced as a Top 15 guy in a really good field, and I won’t be betting on him this week as he has missed the cut the last 2 years here.

Last year he was in pretty good form coming into the tournament, and only shot -1 barely missing the cut, and in 2022 he barely missed the cut, and again, was coming into that week in pretty good form. I don’t know why he’s struggled at this course, but it’s enough to make me stay away from him this week.

Sungjae Im

He’s been playing really well lately, and as we noted last week, the tournaments he’s struggled at this year were the Majors. When he gets to an easy course, he thrives as evident by 12th, 3rd, 8th and 9th place finishes at much easier courses than the Majors.

However, he’s played here the last 2 years and has missed the cut easily in both years. Maybe he’s focused on next week, but he’s priced as a Top 13 guy this week, and I won’t get near him.

Robert MacIntyre

I think he’ll be a popular pick this week because he has a recent win, and he finished 2nd here last year, but he’s the definition of feast or famine this season as he has 5 Top 20 finishes and 10 finishes of 60th or missed cut.

In fact, he only has 2 tournaments with finishes between 52nd and 16th. Last year he finished 2nd, but Round 4 was a crazy windy day, and he shot 64 in those crazy conditions.

Going into Round 4 he was 5 shots behind McIlroy, the eventual winner. With the weather being calm all week, I don’t know if we see another Top 3 finish, and he’s priced as a Top 15 guy.

Outside of last year, he had missed the cut in 2 out of 4 years at this tournament. With his inconsistency here and overall, I think it’s a coin flip whether he finishes Top 15 or outside the Top 50.

2024 Genesis Scottish Open: DraftKings Darlings

Mark Hubbard $6500

The streak continues as Hubbard made the cut last week, and that’s now 18/18 on making cuts. He’s never played here, but as long as they keep giving me this low price on Hubbard, he’s going to be in my lineup.

Tom McKibbin $7000

I’ll put McKibbin in my lineup as he’s been great on the European tour with 6 Top 10 finishes in his last 9 tournaments. Add to that he made the cut and finished 41st at The US Open, and he finished 35th here last year and this price seems like a bargain.

Davis Thompson $7900

Fading a random winner has been a good strategy over the years, but I don’t think Thompson is a random winner.

He’s finished 2nd, 17th, MC, 27th, 9th, 2nd and 1st in his last 7 tournaments, and over those 9 weeks he has the 5th best total strokes gained in this field. He’s been fantastic, and I can’t pass him up at $7900.

Rest Of Lineup: Min Woo Lee $9200, Tom Kim $9500, Tommy Fleetwood $9900
