2024 Memorial Tournament Course: Muirfield Village Country Club – Golf Picks

Jack Nicklaus designed the course, and still oversees the adjustments to the course, and he wants it to be a true test of all parts of the game.

The course is a Par 72 at 7550 yards, and it was a little bit of everything in terms of difficulty. The rough is thick and will gobble up wayward drives creating long approach shots that are difficult to control, the greens have lots of contours and breaks, and there are tree-line fairways as well as water hazards in play on 13 holes.

This is a course that requires patience, and taking your medicine if the hole is going well. Wind could be a factor this week as it looks like it will be 15+ mph Thursday-Saturday so don’t expect low scores.

I would think a score of -10 would get the win, but with rain in the forecast for Wednesday, the greens could be pretty scorable on Thursday and Friday.

5th Hole…Par 5 547 Yards

It’s a scoreable Par 5 that players can probably reach in two if they hit the fairway, but the lie in the fairway will be downhill so even then it’s not a sure thing you can hit the green.

Anything in the rough off the tee will be a layup, and I love the water that splits the fairway and surrounds the green. It’s a hole where you’ll see birdies and maybe some eagles, but there will also be bigger numbers as it’s a high-risk/reward hole.

14th Hole…Par 4 360 Yards

Players can lay up short of the water which splits the fairway or they can try and bomb it over the water, but anything left or right off the tee is trouble as trees, water and thick rough will punish any bad tee shots. The green is long and narrow so hitting it is not a sure thing if the tee shot is a layup. It’s just a fun hole with many different strategies and outcomes.

18th Hole…Par 4 484 Yards

A beautiful, and brutal finishing hole as this long Par 4 has a big dogleg to the right. Anything missing the fairway to the right will end up in thick rough or sand, and anything to the left will be a creek or rough making a 2nd shot almost impossible to hit the green. There are four bunkers around the green, and those will get plenty of action this week.

2024 Memorial Tournament: Players That Can Trip You Up

Patrick Cantlay

“He loves this place, he plays so good here” has been what I’ve heard all year regarding Patrick Cantlay, but this year is not 2023, 2022 or 2021, and he’s just not elite this year.

He’s 16th in this field in total strokes gained this year, and he has two finishes inside the Top 10, and six finishes outside the Top 25. His putting isn’t very good this year, and neither are his approaches, and he’s still priced as a Top 7 golfer. I don’t get it, I won’t be betting on him.

Xander Schauffele

This feels like a bit of a letdown spot for Schauffele who is priced as a Top 3 golfer this week. Getting the win at The PGA Championship was amazing for him, but I’m guessing there was a lot of celebrating and relaxing for him, and he’s never finished Top 10 at this course. I’m sure he’ll play well, but I would be nervous at playing him to win or in head-to-heads this week.

Ludvig Aberg

On paper, his length and ball striking should do well here, but we saw him WD before a tournament with knee soreness, and the next time he did tee it up, he missed the cut at The PGA Championship, and he hasn’t played the last two weeks.

If he has a serious/ nagging injury, he’ll struggle bad at this tough course, and there’s no way I’m betting on him this week. If the matchup is right, he’s probably a fade.

2024 Memorial Tournament: DraftKings Darlings

Lucas Glover $7000

Glover has made 12 out of 14 cuts this year including seven straight, and of those seven, six have been top 25 finishes. He missed the cut here last year, but made the cut nine times previously. His putting is weak, but his approach numbers are fantastic, and that’s what this course is about.

Rickie Fowler $7000

Fowler has made five straight cuts, and he loves playing here as he’s finished Top 25 in six out of the last eight years. His numbers are decent everywhere, and he isn’t struggling in one particular area so I think he can make the cut again this week.

Denny McCarthy $7600

He’s made the cut in 12 out 14 tournaments this year, and he gives us upside as he’s finished 2nd and 5th here the last two years, and he has two top six finishes recently. He’s #1 in the field in strokes gained putting the last three months, and if his putter gets hot this week he could be the DFS steal of the week.

Rest Of Lineup: Tom Kim $7800, Shane Lowry $7900, Scottie Scheffler $12,500
