2025 WM Phoenix Open Course Preview

TPC Scottsdale, home of the WM Phoenix Open, is set up for low scores with warm, calm weather and dry course conditions.

The firm fairways will provide plenty of roll, giving players extra distance off the tee and shortening approach shots into greens.

However, the dry conditions will also make stopping the ball on the greens more difficult, putting a premium on precise iron play and controlled spin.

The course is best known for its stadium-like atmosphere, especially at the par-3 16th hole, where  thousands of fans create one of the most electric scenes in golf.

With scoring  opportunities on the reachable par-5s and drivable par-4 17th, expect aggressive play  and plenty of birdies.

Players who can control their approach shots and adjust to the  firm greens will have the best chance to go low in this high-energy event.

I normally do my favorite hole and 18th hole ranking, but I’m just going to go over one of my favorite 3-hole stretches on tour. Holes 16, 17 and 18 at TPC Scottsdale.

2025 WM Phoenix Open Favorite Holes

16th Hole: Par 3 160 yards

It’s the most famous Par 3 in the world as the party goes all day at this hole. It’s not a complicated hole, just a wedge, and the greens this week appear to be a bit dry so the  ball is going to release when it lands making it a bit difficult to control the spin. It’s an

easy green to hit so a bogey on this hole is a massive mistake, but it’s all about the fans and the fun on this hole.

17th Hole: Par 4 332 yards

I love drivable Par 4’s, and this one is one of my favorites. The longer players can get it  on the green with the perfect drives, but most will come up short, and the ball tends to roll off to the right, which can create a very difficult up and down depending on the pin  location.

The water on the left will certainly eat up some drives, and with these fast greens, don’t be surprised if someone chips the ball onto the green and then it rolls off  into the water. It’s such a great hole going into 18 where a birdie is just as likely as a  bogey.

18th Hole: Par 4 442 yards

It’s not a long finishing hole, but it’s great test. Water on the left, and bunkers on the right off the tee, and the bunkers on the right will get plenty of action as guys look to avoid the water.

Past the water are bunkers with grass mounds that can make for  difficult lies if the ball gets in a bad spot.

The green isn’t complex, it has bunkers on the  right, and a small one on the left so any drive that lands in the fairway will make for a straightforward approach.

Expect a lot of Par’s on this hole. It’s a pretty basic hold in  my opinion so while I like the hole, I can’t rate it very high.

2025 WM Phoenix Open: Players That Can Trip You Up

Jordan Spieth

He’s finished 6th here the last 2 years, but he’s a fade until he shows he’s comfortable  with his game. He doesn’t have a Top 20 finish since the Valero Open last April, and in the last 12 months he’s +0.30 total strokes gained which is outside the Top 70 in this field.

He’s had wrist injuries, and it’s really derailed his game, and I think he’s record  here will make people want to bet on him. I’m not falling for it.

Sahith Theegala

He’s finised Top 5 in 2 out of the last 3 years, but he’s started off 2025 well below  standards as he’s +0.18 total strokes gained in the 4 tournaments he’s played in this season.

It’s a different course and environment than the previous 4 tournaments, but no finishes better than 36th this year is enough to keep me off of him.

Tom Kim

He finished 7th last week, and got some nice coverage on the broadcast so I think he’ll be fresh in everyone’s mind, but before that 7th place finish he finished MC and 65th his previous 2 tournaments.

He’s finished 17th and 50th here the last 2 years, but he’s priced as a Top 7 player this week, and he’s only +0.07 putting this year. That certainly won’t be good enough to contend so I’ll stay away.

WM Phoenix Open Draftkings Darlings

Adam Schenk $6600

Schenk had a WD at The American Express, but he finished 6th the week before that, and 25th the very next week so the WD appears to be just one random week. He’s played solid here finishing 17th and 23rd the last 2 years so at this price, I think he could be a real steal.

Lee Hodges $7100

He finished 33rd out of 80 golfers last week at one of the lowest prices so I’ll gladly go back to him as he’s finished 10th, 34th, 9th, 33rd the last 4 weeks.

He’s missed the cut the 2 times he’s played here so we might be playing with fire, but I love his current form  as he’s +1.40 total strokes gained this season which is 12th best in this field.

Sam Stevens $7600

Rinse and repeat with Stevens who came in 17th last week, and that’s 4 straight made  cuts for him as he’s been the best Darling this season. He finished 28th here last year so he’s comfortable playing here.

Full Lineup: Adam Schenk $6600, Lee hodges $7100, Sam Stevens $7600, Si Woo Kim  $8000, Sam Burns $10,000, Justin Thomas $10,500
