Max Homa pulled through for victory last week at the Wells Fargo at a very tough TPC Potomac while this week should be much easier for the players as the winning score is expected to be in the mid-20-under par range.

The AT&T Byron Nelson Course and Field
From Nick Borrman: Craig Ranch made its Tour debut last year at this event and played as one of the easiest tracks of the entire season with K.H. Lee winning at 25-under. The cut was at a crazy low score of -6 and over the first two rounds combined, there was just one single score over par which was a 73 (+1) with six total scores of even par 72. All other rounds were under par.
This year the scoring may be down just a little bit though as wind should play a factor blowing in the 15 mph range all week, which will be welcomed by the players in terms of comfort as high temps are expected in the 90s all week.
The reason for the low scores is because the course is void of much trouble as the fairways are wide and the greens are large. There is a creek that crosses the course several times which brings water into play on a several holes, but overall, the course doesn’t have a lot of trouble spots.
The field this week is stronger than last week with eight of the top 20 players in the OWGR competing. A big reason is that the course is just a couple hours away from next week’s PGA Championship in Tulsa and the elements should be very similar.
Nick’s Betting Favorites
When you get a tournament that can push into the mid 20-under par range, don’t be surprised to see a couple long shots in contention on Sunday. The best players in the world tend to rise to the top the tougher the course plays, but when it is easy and the tournament becomes a putting exhibition, don’t shy away from some longer numbers.
Hideki Matsuyama +3500 (DK) | Top-10 +330 (DK)
I’ll start this week with Matsuyama who isn’t necessarily a longshot, but his odds are much longer than many of the others in the top-10 in Total Strokes Gained coming in. Matsuyama has two wins already this season and is coming off a T14 in his last start at the Masters.
Matsuyama ranks No. 14 on Tour this season in birdie average, which will obviously be important with scores expected to be as low as they are, while he also ranks No. 12 in greens in regulation which should give him plenty of chances. Finally, Matsuyama ranks No. 4 in par-5 scoring at 4.46 this season so you can almost put him at -4 before even starting his round.
Talor Gooch +4500 (DK) | Top-10 +450 (DK)
Gooch is one of many local boys this week and he does his best damage on stock par 72s. He ranks No. 1 on Tour in eagles this season, is tied for first in par-3 scoring and tied for fourth in par-5 scoring alongside of Matsuyama. He also ranks No. 19 in greens in regulation but when he does miss the green, he is even better at getting up and down, ranking No. 7 on Tour in scrambling.
Gooch missed the cut at The Players and at the Genesis but finished no worse than T27 in his other eight starts in 2022. He won in his final start of 2021 at the RSM Classic at -22 proving he can go low with the best of them.
BEST BET Sam Burns Top-20 +120 (DK)
Save for a stretch in January and February where he missed three-straight cuts, Burns has been fantastic this season with two wins among ten top-20s in his other 12 starts. Two of those were partner events with Billy Horschel, but he won the Valspar at -17 and the Sanderson Farms at -22 while also finishing -21 at the CJ Cup in a T5. Plenty of evidence he can go low enough to win this week let alone just finish top-20.
Burns ranks No. 10 in greens in regulation this year, No. 10 in Total Strokes Gained, No. 11 in Strokes Gained Approach and No. 7 in birdie average. He also ranks No. 10 in both par-3 and par-5 scoring while ranking seventh in Putting Average. Expect him to have plenty of scoring chances and likely convert a lot of them.
