The Pebble Beach Pro-Am Field
From Nick Borrman: Another week, another multi-course event, and like two weeks ago, played alongside amateurs. A full field of 156 players will play each course once, Thursday thru Saturday, before the 54-hole cut down to the Top-60 and ties who will duke it out Sunday at Pebble Beach. Only ten of the Top-50 players in the world are competing this week, compared to 20 at the Saudi.
Weather looks favorable and consistent for all four days which is important as a good strategy for this event has always been to find the guys playing Monterrey Peninsula on the best scoring weather day as it is the easiest course of the week. Pebble Beach features the smallest greens on the entire PGA Tour schedule and when the wind is up, they are that much harder to hit. But with no clear advantage in terms of weather on any given day, I think we can throw that strategy out the window this week.
Nick’s Picks
Luke List broke through last week for his first PGA Tour win, but it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as he was playing well coming in, ranked No. 8 in the field in Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green. In fact, all four winners of 2022 have come into the week ranked inside the Top-10 in either Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green, Approach or both.
Daniel Berger +900 | +100 Top-10
Berger is No. 1 in this field in both Strokes Gained Approach and Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green (Cantlay passed him for Total Strokes Gained because of putting), and oh yea, he is the defending champion who has proven he can successfully defend a title having done so at the Fedex St. Jude last year. He doesn’t have a sexy number here but at least it’s better than Cantlay at +650.
Besides winning last year, he finished T5 and T10 in his previous two trips to Pebble and has some good results coming in as he has finished T20, T5, T7 and T11 in his last four starts.
Not interested in him at that price in the Outright market? Take a look at him in matchups, currently at a nice +125 price vs Cantlay.
Hayden Buckley +15000 | +1100 Top-10 | +500 Top-20
Who? If you don’t know his name yet, get to know him. Buckley is a Korn Ferry Tour graduate who ranks No. 5 in this field in Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green. After finishing T4 at the KFT Championship, Buckley parlayed that into a T4 at Sanderson Farm and a T8 at Shriners in the fall. Although he did miss the cut in each of his last two starts, at the Farmers and The American Express, he did finish T12 at the Sony Open.
Buckley is more of a Top-10 / Top-20 play for me as he isn’t making the cut every week, but when he does, he is finishing high on the leaderboard.
