Farmers Insurance Open Betting Preview

First things first, for the fourth straight year, the Farmers is scheduled to tee off on Wednesday and finish on Saturday as to not compete with NFL Championship Sunday, so make sure to get your bets in early this week.

Once again, the players are facing the task of playing multiple courses for this tournament, though this week is just two, the North and the South at Torrey Pines. Because of that, the event will revert to a 36-hole cut with the final two rounds both being played on the South.

Both courses are stock par 72s, but the North is much easier and imperative players take advantage of if they want to lift the trophy at the end of the week.

Just how much easier is it? Well, over the last five editions of this tournament, the scoring has averaged between 2.1 to 4.2 strokes easier. That is significant.

Considering the South Course is where 54 holes of this event will be played, we will focus our attention there.  The thing to know about the South Course is simple. It is LONG.

At over 7,700 yards, it is the longest course the players will play all season. To put it simply, if length was ever an important factor, this is the week for it. However, missing the fairway is a significant penalty as the rough is 4 inches long, so one cannot sacrifice accuracy though.

That distance means players will be hitting a lot more mid-to-long irons this week compared to the Tour average and uncoincidentally, scoring will be much higher than last week. Take an extra look at players ranked high in proximity or GIRs from 175 yards or longer.

Weather looks great all four days though Saturday’s finale does cool with temperatures only expected to reach the high-50s after nearing 70 degrees each day with Thursday pushing upwards of 80. Rain is not expected and winds shouldn’t be too much of a factor though they pickup for the finale at 10-20 mph.

Farmers Insurance Open Predictions

Winner: Keegan Bradley +2200 (Everywhere) | Top-10 +260 (FanDuel or DraftKings)

Keegan opened with a T15, T6 burst on the Aloha Swing on the heels of a solo 5th at the Hero in December and a win at the BMW Championship in August. He has also made the cut here in seven straight starts with three Top-5 finishes.

He also ranks 10th in Total SG over the last 12 months and 5th in Total SG over his most recent five starts.

Keegan will already be a part of the Ryder Cup this fall as captain, but everyone knows he wants to qualify as a player, and you would be hard pressed to find someone else that would mean more to. I think we see a very solid season from Keegan this year and that continues/starts this week.

Winner: Ben Griffin +5500 (FanDuel) | Top-20 +220 (FanDuel or DraftKings)

When you venture further down the oddsboard, you won’t always find the combination of form and course history and Griffin lacks the latter this week.

With only two starts under his belt at this tournament, he has a T31 and MC here, but hey, course history, or lack thereof, didn’t stop Matthieu Pavon from winning in his debut last year.

Recent form though is strong for Griffin. His T7 finish last week at the American Express extended a run of five Top-24 finishes in his last six starts. Going back further, he has 11 Top-20 finishes over the last ten months.

See you next week for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am!
