Hero World Challenge Betting Preview

While not an official PGA Tour event, the Hero is still a fun event to watch and of course there is money to be made, both for the players and for us bettors. Only 20 players receive the invite to this Tiger Woods hosted event so obviously there is no cut.

Unless you live under a rock, the big news this week is that Tiger is not only hosting, but making his return to golf, his first start since the Masters back in April. He says he is having no pain in his ankle which he had fused shortly after the Masters and Albany Golf Club is a perfect track for him to return.

Also in the field this week is Viktor Hovland who is vying for a three-peat, along with world #1 Scottie Scheffler who has finished runner-up to Hovland each of the last two years.

Another exciting name to watch is Will Zalatoris who just like Tiger, makes his return from injury after having back surgery after withdrawing from the Masters before hitting a shot.

The course is relatively flat so it will be an easy walk for the 82-time PGA Tour winner. Ernie Els designed the par 72 track which measures a little over 7,400 yards. The course has five par 5s and five par 3s and features big dunes all over the links-style layout.

Being on the islands, the biggest defense for the course is the wind. This week, the wind will be average for the area, blowing 10-20 mph all four days. In fact, all four days look nearly identical with temperatures in the low 80s, average wind, and no rain in sight.

Hero World Challenge Outright Winner: Viktor Hovland +400 (Everywhere)

From Nick Borrman:

It’s hard not to want to put your money on Hovland pulling off the three-peat this week, but if you do so, you are basically putting all your eggs in that basket as a 4-1 price on an Outright is a low number, even if he just has to beat 19 other players.

Though Hovland has not teed it up on TOUR since winning the FedexCup, he has played on the DP World Tour twice, finishing 5th at the BMW PGA Championship and T2 and the DP World Tour Championship just two weeks ago.

Scottie leads the field in SG T2G over the last six and twelve months, but if you factor in putting, Hovland is the top name over the last six months and three months. Hard to see him anywhere else but near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

Hero World Challenge Tournament 3-Balls: Collin Morikawa +125 over Justin Thomas and Matthew Fitzpatrick (DraftKings)

The Leaderboard market is a little tough this week considering there are only 20 players in the field, but I see a decent opportunity here to cash on a hot player coming in.

Morikawa won his last start at the ZOZO Championship on the heels of a season-ending T6 at the TOUR Championship. He is one of the best ball-strikers, aka, tee-to-green specialists which is a skillset that has played very well here and is always at a premium whenever there is wind to deal with.

He is up against JT who as everyone knows, is coming off a horrible season though he did grab a 5th place at the Fortinet and a 4th at the Nedbank Golf Challenge on the DP World Tour in his two most recent starts but struggled at the Ryder Cup in between.

Fitzpatrick seems more likely the guy to give Morikawa a run for his money as he won recently at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He did not play well though in his last start finishing T27 at the DP World Tour Championship and has not cracked the Top-10 in two previous starts at this event.

See you in two weeks for the Grant Thornton Invitational!
