Course architect Andrew Green led the design to bring East Lake back to the original Donald Ross design as every hole was touched along the way.

Tees were moved, bunkers were both moved and removed, trees were removed, and greens were completely re-shaped to just name a few of the changes. Because of that, the course is mint, the rough is thick and lush, and the greens are as pure as one could ever hope for.

East Lake now plays as a par-71 (was a par-70) as the 14th hole has been stretch an additional 60 yards and converted from a par-4 to a par-5.

There were a few more yardage increases around the property making the total length just shy of 7,500 yards. Historically speaking, Tee-to-Green was the most important metric to look at here and should once again prove true even more than years past because of the unknown putting surfaces.

I mentioned last week with that unfamiliar putting greens can help poor putters and that’s exactly what happened at the BMW Championship where Keegan Bradely won, despite losing 1.69 strokes to the field on the greens. So, once again, don’t shy away from a player this week simply because they may be a poor putter.

By now, you should be familiar with the Tour Championship’s unique format. Well, the format is standard stroke play, but starting strokes are in play as all 30 players do not start on a level playing field.

Scottie Scheffler leads the way starting at 10-under for his season-long efforts, while Xander Schauffele (-8), Hideki Matsuyama (-7), Keegan Bradley (-6) and Ludvig Aberg (-5) round out the Top-5 with the rest of the field starting between 4-under and even par.

Because of that, you can bet the winner in two different markets this week. To ‘Win the FedExCup’ or ‘Including Starting Strokes’ and ‘Without Starting Strokes’.

This allows bettors to get some longshot money at guys at the bottom of the leaderboard to start as nobody further than the 7-seed, starting at 4-under, has won this event since the inception of starting strokes (Rory McIlroy).

Additionally, two players have won from the pole position, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay, while Scottie Scheffler has lost from the #1 spot each of the last two seasons.

As usual, we will wrap with the weather which is expected to be very Atlanta-like this week. Hot and humid with a slight chance of a thunderstorm on any given day. If that were to happen, a field of just 30 players helps keep the tournament on schedule. Wind will not be a factor this week at under 10 mph.

2024 Tour Championship Picks, Predictions and Betting Odds | How to Bet Golf | Tee Time

PGA Tour Championship Outright Winner: Sam Burns +2000 ‘Without Starting Strokes’ market (MGM)

From Nick Borrman:

Full transparency. I haven’t bet on Burns in a while but that has clearly been a mistake as he has been red hot during the playoffs finishing T5 at the FedEx St. Jude and T2 last week at the BMW Championship thanks to a 7-under final round.

His putter has been ridiculous gaining +1.89 SG Putting per round two weeks ago and +1.80 last week. Going back a little further, Burns has gained more than 28 strokes on the greens over his last six starts. The putter really is the great equalizer.

Though the greens are new this year, Burns has been comfortable around East Lake as well gaining nearly 14 strokes Putting over the last three years combined as well.

Finally, the situation for guys like Burns starting six strokes (or more) back is simple. They need to play aggressive and go for birdies as their only chance to close the gap.

Nobody is better than Burns in that category as he ranks 1st in Birdie Conversion and 2nd in Birdie Average. Let’s ride the hot putter to another strong finish.

PGA Tour Championship Top-10 Finish: Adam Scott Top-10 +180 | (FD or DK)

This includes starting strokes where Scott begins at 3-under.

Adam Scott is peaking at the right time and has been red hot over his last four starts. It started with a close call in Scotland finishing runner-up to Robert MacIntyre and then following that up with a T10 the following week at The Open.

He took a month off before the playoffs and began with a T18 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship before another close call last week finishing runner-up to Keegan Bradley.

The only real concern is that this is his third start in a row which is something he rarely does as he is extremely picky with his schedule at 44 years old. But all that time on Tour has also seen him make 12 trips to East Lake in his career, winning the Tour Championship in 2006 among five other Top-10s.

Scott’s Tee to Green numbers have been very good, ranking 11th in this field over the last three months with a hot putter as well, ranking 9th in that same timeframe. Over just his last five starts, Scott has gained nearly 16 strokes with his putter.

Aside from his age and this being his third straight start, I can’t see any other reason Scott won’t contend again this week.

Thanks for another great season and see you in two weeks for the Procore Championship!
