The Signature events are now over this season and the most important stretch of the year (for those players not currently ranked in the Top-50 in FedexCup points) is here as six of the next seven weeks will feature full-field events including the last major of the year at the Open Championship.

In the immediate future, each of the next three weeks will likely be events void of the biggest names in the sport, especially with Scottie Scheffler already announcing he will be taking off until the Open Championship. Though I guess that is a good thing for everyone else on Tour, and for us outright bettors of course.

Detroit Golf Club, well at least how it routes for the tournament playing 17 holes on the North Course and one hole from the South Course, plays to a par-72 measuring around 7,350 yards.

It’s not overly long when considering par, but distance has certainly been an attribute of several winners here including Bryson DeChambeau and Tony Finau.

Like last week, the winner will have to make birdies in bunches as four of the five winners have reached at least 23-under par.

So, while bombing it off the tee will always be an advantage, there is no reason to ignore shorter hitters this week as the winner is simply going to be the person hitting the most greens and sinking the most putts.

Both wedge play and long irons will be the key approach buckets this week. Wedges and short irons with many of the par 4s while long irons or woods will be needed this week as we are back to four par 5s.

Tom Kim headlines the field and is the betting favorite, but his price is ridiculous and certainly was lowered by his near win last week. It’s asking a lot for him to be up again this week after the grind on Sunday, which lasted even longer with protestors and a playoff.

Cameron Young is the only other Top-25 player in the field and is the 2nd betting favorite fresh of his 59 last week.

This isn’t a week to bet the short numbers though, at least not for me. There are plenty of players in this field in the 30-1 or higher range that are playing well and can win here.

The weather looks near perfect for the first two rounds with temperatures in the upper 70s, with light winds and no rain before thunderstorms move into the forecast for much of the day on Saturday. Great weather however returns for Sunday’s finale.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Outright Winner: Taylor Pendrith +3500 (FanDuel or DraftKings)

Pendrith is a name I’ve been watching for a couple of weeks now and he has been playing steady golf including that win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

Since his T11 at the Corales Puntacana Championship, Pendrith has finished inside the Top-25 in seven of his nine starts including a T16 at the U.S. Open. Because of that, he ranks 3rd in this field in Total SG over the last three months in this field.

Taylor has a strong profile to contend here. He hits it a long way, ranking 15th in Driving Distance, while very few can roll the rock better than him as he ranks 4th in SG Putting.

He also ranks 15th in Proximity to the Hole from under 100 yards so if he is bombing his driver in play, he will likely have plenty of short wedges in his hand.

Pendrith has been making birdies and putting up low scores all season as he ranks 14th in Adjusted Scoring and 15th in Birdie Average, both of which appeal even higher considering there are only two Top-25 players in the world in this field.

Finally, Pendrith has played well here in his only two starts finishing co-runner-up in his debut in 2022 while also finishing T14 last year.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Top-20 Finish: Robert MacIntyre +220 (Bet365)

This guy just won a couple of weeks ago at the RBC Canadian Open, holding off Rory McIlroy to earn his first PGA Tour win, and 4th worldwide.

He understandably had an off week the following week at the U.S. Open where he missed the cut in those brutal conditions, but rebounded with a solid T16 last week at the Travelers where low scores were needed to contend.

MacIntyre also has more recent strong finishes including a T8 at the Zurich Classic, T13 at the Myrtle Beach Classic and a T8 at the PGA Championship, which oddly for a major, also required very low scores.

Like Pendrith, MacIntyre hits it a long way, is a great putter, and ranks 4th in Total SG over the last three months in this field. I guess those are the statistical profiles I have made my bed with this week.
