The Course & Field – Detroit Golf Club (Detroit, MI)

From Nick Borrman:

The field weakens this week in Detroit as many of the biggest stars take a much-needed rest, but eight of the Top-30 in the OWGR are still teeing it up this week, so the tournament isn’t without a few headliners.

Tony Finau is the defending champion and betting favorite followed closely by a surging Rickie Fowler who looks primed to end his nearly four-year winless drought.

Several others like Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Max Homa, Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im round out the pack priced at 20-1 or less. The good news is that not too far after that, the numbers quickly drop near 50-1 on several guys who look ready to win on TOUR.

Like we saw last week, the winning score will likely end lower than 20-under par which can bring several lesser-known players into the mix in what should be a putting contest. The course is a Donald Ross par-72 at just over 7,300 yards.

The TOUR is using 17 holes from the North Course and one hole from the South Course this week. Fairways are wide, there aren’t many hazards in play and the rough is not very penal so a grip-it and rip-it will be the strategy employed by most.

Most approach shots will be coming from inside 150 yards and after back-to-back weeks with few par-5s, Detroit Golf Club features four of the bombers favorite scoring holes.

Greens average a little over 5,100 square feet which is smaller than the TOUR average so strong approach players who aren’t necessarily the best putters have the edge in terms of chances created this week. Still, the winner will need to hole putts and likely make upwards of 25 birdies (or more) to lift the trophy.

Weather looks pretty good all week though there is a decent chance of thunderstorms on Saturday, but nothing to give an advantage to either side of the Thursday-Friday draw.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Predictions

This is a great week to sprinkle a few more names on your Outright card at slightly lower risk but with much bigger reward. There are several names in the 40-1 to 60-1 range that can win. Don’t shy away from them.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Outright Winner

Austin Eckroat +6000 (Bet365)

Eckroat is one of the hottest players in this field and ranks 13th on Data Golf’s Trending Table with Rickie Fowler the only other player in this field that ranks higher than him.

He has made the cut in seven straight events, but over his last five events, his worst finish is a T30. During that run he has a T2 at the Byron Nelson, T10 at the US Open and is coming off a T24 last week at the Travelers Championship.

Eckroat has gained strokes off the tee in nine straight starts and until last week, had gained on approach in five straight, but still finished T24 at the Travelers. In addition to his solid off the tee and approach game, Eckroat ranks 31st this season scrambling.

Austin has yet to win on TOUR, but the Rocket Mortgage Classic has crowned first-time winners in two of its five seasons on TOUR, so no reason to think we might not see another this year.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Leaderboard Finish

Ludvig Aberg Top-10 +500 | Top-20 +250 (Bet365)

This is a great week to take a chance on one of the game’s future stars as the newest amateur-turned professional has already made a splash on TOUR finishing T25 at the Canadian Open and T24 last week at the Travelers Championship.

He also had two prior starts as an amateur back in March, making the cut at both the Arnold Palmer Invitationals and the Valspar Championship with another respectable T24 at the API. That means in four TOUR starts this season, he is 4-for-4 in cuts made with three Top-25 finishes.

While he currently ranks outside the Top-500 in the World, that is only because he doesn’t have many professional starts under his belt. But he was the #1 amateur in the world as he finished his college career at Texas Tech by winning four of his final seven collegiate starts.

Like many of the youngest players are doing, Aberg can smash the ball off the tee which is a big advantage this week with little trouble for wayward drives.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Top-10 Player to Avoid

Max Homa +1800

I would also throw Keegan Bradley into the mix in a clear letdown spot, but Homa is a guy I’m not even trusting to make the cut.

Since his incredible run through the fall and into early 2023 that saw him win twice and basically finish inside the Top-20 every time he teed it up, Homa has been struggling.

Since the Masters, where he finished T43, Homa has played in eight events and missed the cut in half of those.

While he does have two Top-10s at the Wells Fargo Championship (past winner) and the Charles Schwab Challenge, his other two finishes were a T43 and T55. That means he has finished inside the Top-40 in just two of his last eight starts.

During his hot run, Homa was gaining +2.26 strokes per round, which ranked #1 in this field, but since, he is gaining only +0.46 strokes per round which ranks 38th in this weak field, yet he is priced as a Top-5 favorite. That’s a pass for me.

See you next week for the John Deere Classic!
