Sanderson Farms Championship

Sanderson Farms Championship Betting Preview

The Sanderson Farms is the second of eight Fall Series events as the players battle to finish inside the Top-125 and retain their Tour card for next season. For that reason, the field is weak which makes predicting the outcome a little trickier than most. It is probably wise to keep it light this week.

On that same note, this week’s DP World Tour stop may offer better betting opportunities with players like Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood in the field. But I digress, let’s talk about this week’s PGA Tour event.

This week’s favorite is also the only player that competed last week at the President’s Cup, Mackenzie Hughes. He won here two years ago so the odds certainly are warranted, otherwise everyone in the field comes in full rested.

The course is a par 72 and measures over 7,400 yards in length so distance off the tee has certainly been an important metric. Past winners Sam Burns, Sergio Garcia, Cameron Champ and last year’s Luke List, all prove that point. Oddly though, the four par 5s typically play as one of the toughest sets of par 5s on Tour.

Missing the fairway isn’t a huge penalty here with rough no more than 2.5 inches in length and because of that, most players will hit plenty of drivers this week.

Even with the course measuring over 7,400 yards, that leaves plenty of approach shots at 150 yards or less so take a look at players that excel in that yardage bucket. Patton Kizzire and Patrick Fishburn both rank in the Top-5 in GIR from 125-150 yards, for example.

Finally, the weather looks unlikely to make any impact this week. Daytime temperatures will reach the mid-80s all four days with only a slight chance of rain on Friday, while wind will be light.

Sanderson Farms Outright Winner

Nick Dunlap +3000 (Bet365)

While this type of event can certainly produce first-time winners as this tournament has in six in the last ten editions, I’m sticking with an already proven winner in Nick Dunlap to make another run this week.

Already twice a winner on Tour, in January at the American Express while still an amateur and again in July at the Barracuda Championship, Dunlap certainly provides plenty of upside this week.

Nick is long of the tee ranking in the Top-35 in Driving Distance this season, while he also ranks highly in the approach bucket I believe is important, #23 in Proximity to the Hole from 50-125 yards.

When he hits greens, he putts well as he ranks #9 in Birdie Conversion Percentage which the winner will certainly need to make plenty of this week.

Sanderson Farms Championship Top 20 Finish

Patrick Fishburn +160 (FanDuel or DraftKings)

After a slow start this season, Fishburn came alive down the stretch finishing inside the Top-25 in eight of his final 12 starts including three Top-10s.

He then picked up right where he left off finishing solo 3rd in the first Fall Series event at the Procore Championship three weeks ago.

For that reason, Fishburn ranks #1 in this field in Total SG over the last three months and #3 over the last six months. He has gained strokes in all five categories during that time with most of his success coming off the tee hitting for both distance and accuracy.

Of course, being a rookie means he doesn’t have course experience, so I’ll leave him off my outright card, but that hasn’t stopped him from high finishes and in this field, he should rise to near the top with even just average play.

See you next week for the Black Desert Championship!
