The Sentry Course: Plantation Course Kapalua
Overall, this is a very easy course if there is no wind, and it doesn’t look like there will be punishing wind this week so look for the winning score to get close to -25 and maybe even -30.
This tournament requires hot putting as short and long players can hit the fairways and the greens, but the longest players can leave themselves very short approach shots so expect the top 10 to made up of the bombers and the hottest putters.
This tournament is different this year as it’s normally been just the winners from the previous season, but the field is made up of winners and the top 50 in FedEx Cup points so you’ll see quite a few players who haven’t played this course before, and keep in mind the short fields so when you’re looking at someone like Hovland who has finished 18th, 30th and 31st here, that those finishes are terrible for somenoe his caliber.
The Sentry: Featured Holes
Hole 1 520 yard Par 4-It’s one of the few holes that will cause some bogeys this week as it’s a long par 4, but if you put your drive to the right, you’ll miss the downhill roll and be left with a tough second shot. Starting off with a bogey here will be a huge letdown so I love that this hole puts some stress on the players to start their round
Hole 5 530 yard Par 5-I love quirky holes, and this was one of the easiest holes on the course so they just put a random bunker in the middle of the fairway at 300 yards. I love it. It’s not a big bunker, but it will surely be in some players heads and if you miss left or right or put it in the bunker, this goes from an easy birdie hole to a par hole. Hopefully, this bunker gets a workout this week.
Hole 14 305 yard Par 4-This looks like a drivable Par 4, and most guys will give it a rip, but the green is the smallest on the course, and there are a lot bunkers to try and avoid. Should be a fun hole.
Hole 18 677 yard Par 5-It’s an incredible tee shot as the tee shot is wide open and all tee shots feed the ball downhill and to the left, but iif the ball goes too far to the left, there is trouble so the tee shot needs to start right and roll left. It’s a beautiful hole that will see it’s fair share of birdies and bogeys. Great finishing hole.
The Sentry: Players That Can Trip You Up
Jordan Spieth – Plenty of reasons to fade Spieth. First, we have a somewhat of a baby theory as they just had a baby in September. He played the Hero World Challenge, and did well, but that’s a tourney with only 20 players in it.
He doesn’t play great here as he’s finished 13th and 21st here the last two years, and his stats were bad this season due to a wrist injury. I think he’s overpriced, and there are some good head to head matchups against him.
Viktor Hovland – He just doesn’t play well here for some reason. He’s finished 18th, 30th
and 31st the last three years, and with the field being less than 40 players, that’s awful. He’s the second highest favorite, no chance I can invest in him with his course history.
Patrick Cantlay – He’s the third highest priced golfer, and we haven’t seen him since the Ryder Cup and there’s just a lot of drama with him right now.
LIV rumors, slow play frustration, him bitching about money at the Ryder Cup while the US team was getting their heads stomped in…I just don’t know where his confidence level is at. He’s finished 4th, 14th, 4th, and 16th in his 4 times playing here, I’ll pass on him this week.
The Sentry: DraftKings Darlings
Cameron Davis $7100 -In a tournament with no cut, and on a course that rewards a hot putter, I’ll take Cameron Davis who is +1.33 strokes gained putting over the last 3 months. He finished 10th here 2 years ago, so I’ll take the high risk-high reward Davis at a low price.
Eric Cole $7400 – He was the Draftkings Darling MVP in 2023, and here we are again with a great price on him. He has the 17th best total strokes gained in this field the last 6 months, and I love how his putting has gotten better. Let’s keep riding Eric Cole in DFS.
Sungjae Im $8100 – Seems to be underpriced as he’s finished 5th, 8th and 13th the last three years here, and he’s 15th in total strokes gained the last 6 months. Big upside on him at $8100.
Final Lineup: Cameron Davis, Eric Cole, Sunjae Im, Cameron Young, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele
The Sentry: Additional Betting Notes
-Ignore the WD from Schauffele last year. He had a back injury pop up, and he finished 12th, 5th, 2nd, 1st the previous 4 years.
-Matsuyama was really struggling with his neck issue at the end of the season, and he’s finished 21st, 13th, and 41st the last three years here. He has the 13th worst total strokes gained in this field the last 6 months.
-Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman definitely had hangovers after their major wins this year, but Clarks stats over the last 6 months are abysmal.
+0.33 total strokes gained, putting was bad, approaches were worst, and he was putting up similar numbers this time last year. He caught fire over a 9 tournament stretch last season, but outside of those he wasn’t good.
