What a finish last week at the U.S. Open and now the Tour turns its focus to the final Signature Event of the season, but boy, will this course play much differently than we saw at Pinehurst.

TPC River Highlands is one of the shortest courses on the schedule every season. Measuring at just over 6,800 yards, distance is not a major factor this week and the list of past winners prove that with both bombers and plodders winning here.

Last year, the tournament came down to Keegan Bradley’s putter which will likely be the case again this year as the winning score should approach or exceed 20-under par.

One similarity though is the track is a stock par-70 with just two par 5s in play, so with two more par 4s on the scorecard each round, and eight total, looking at those who excel in par 4 scoring is worth an extra minute.

Because of the (lack of) length on this course, players will be faced with a lot of wedges and short to mid irons into greens, so strong wedge play is another statistic to pay attention to.

The field this week is limited to just 72, though there are only 71 now as Rory McIlroy withdrew on Monday citing “one of the toughest days of his professional career” following his collapse at Pinehurst. Those 71 players are guaranteed four rounds with no cut in effect.

However, it is worth noting that many in the field have limited history here as historically this isn’t an event that many of the biggest names would play at and I do believe that course history could give an edge to those few that play and have had success here regularly like Patrick Cantlay who burst back onto the scene out of nowhere last week to finish 3rd at the U.S. Open.

Weather is HOT to start the week with temperatures into the mid-90s during the opener before thunderstorms likely wreak havoc on play at some point on Friday.

Chances of T-storms linger through the weekend, but temperatures drop into a more comfortable mid-80s range for the weekend. The wind is not expected to be a factor.

Travelers Championship Outright Winner: Tony Finau +3300 (FanDuel or MGM)

Admittedly, Finau hasn’t been on my ‘bet on’ list lately but he has worked his way back on it with his recent play.

Of course, his T3 last week will get most of the attention, and that was certainly a great result, but you could see it coming with additional recent strong results including:

T8 the Memorial Tournament
T17 Charles Schwab Challenge
T18 PGA Championship
T12 RBC Heritage
T2 Texas Children’s Houston Open

That’s five Top-20 results in his last seven starts and that honestly is a great way to protect this investment by backing Tony at the current price of +110.

With the driver unlikely to be an important club, TPC River Highlands will be won with strong approach play and strong putting.

While the latter is a worry this week, he has gained more than +0.50 SG Putting in each of this last two tournaments so he should carry confidence with the flatstick this week.

He also ranks 3rd in SG Approach this season and 8th in Birdie Average. It will be necessary to make birdies in bunches this week and Finau has proven he can do that.

Like last week, I like to compare Outright prices for value and with Viktor Hovland, Russell Henley, Tommy Fleetwood and Sam Burns priced at the same or lower odds, I see Tony with a better chance than all of them, so I’m loving his number.

Travelers Championship Top-20 Finish: Patrick Cantlay -140 (FanDuel or DraftKings)

Full transparency, if he doesn’t play as well as he did last week at Pinehurst, I’m probably not betting him, but that finish could be suggesting a return to form for Cantlay who’s approach play has been fantastic each of the last two tournaments.

He has also gotten a few good results this season, but those have all come in bursts. He finished T11 at Pebble Beach then backed it up with a T4 at The Genesis, he also finished T22 at the Masters followed by a T3 at the RBC Heritage. I like his chances to ride another wave into a Top-20 finish this week, and again, remember, this is a field of just 71.

But really, this all comes down to a place Cantlay loves as he has finished in the Top-20 here in six straight years, all those full field events. His finish last week should only bolster his confidence at a track he clearly loves.
