Wyndham Championship Players to Avoid
From Andy Lang: Will Zalatoris – We said he was over-priced last week as a favorite, and he finished tied for 20th deliver way below his price, and we keep saying that his putting isn’t good enough at these easy courses to go really low. Last week in that bad field he was 54th in putting, and he finished 13 shots behind the winner.
It’s another weak field and an easy course, and he’s the betting favorite this week, no way I’m betting on Zalatoris who finished 29th here last year.
Webb Simpson – His history at this tournament is incredible, but you have to go back to the RSM Classic in November of 2021 to find his last top-10 finish. That’s 15-straight tournaments with no finish better than 13th, and he’s the second-highest betting favorite? He’s 131st in greens in regulation and 103rd in putting this year. There’s no chance I’m supporting Webb this week.
Billy Horschel – He had the win at The Memorial, but that’s surrounded by a 21st, a 68th and three missed cuts. I just don’t trust him as the fifth-highest betting favorite.
He has good course history here, but didn’t play this tourney last year, and over the last three months is only +0.06 on Strokes Gained approach, and he’s tied with guys like Chez Reavie for total Strokes Gained this week. He tends to do this recently where he plays better early in the year and then fades at the end.
Billy Horschel after The Match Play Tournament the last three years:
2022: One top-10 in seven tournaments
2021: No top-10s in ten tournaments til the Tour Championship
2020: Two top-10s in 11 tournaments
Wyndham Championship Draftkings Darlings
Taylor Moore ($7,300) – Five-straight made cuts (second best in this field) and a sixth-place finish last week at an easy course similar to this one.
Chris Gotterup ($7,600) – Six made cuts in eight tournaments year for Gotterup, including a seventh-place finish at Puerto Rico and fourth-place finish at John Deere, so he has a bit of upside
Adam Long ($7,700) – Four top-25 finishes in a row gets my attention at this pricetag.
Scott Stallings ($7,800) – His last three finishes are 10th, 8th and 4th. That presents great value if he plays well again.
Si Woo Kim ($8,800) – He’s finished 14th and 15th last two weeks at easy courses, and he loves this course finishing 2nd, 3rd, 5th the last three years and won this tourney in 2016.
Sung Jae Im ($10,500) – I think he’s recovered from the back injury. He’s finished second in his last tournament he played and has two top-9 finishes the last three years here.
Wyndham Championship Best Bet
Sung Jae Im over Will Zalatoris
I went over all of Zalatoris’ stats above how bad he is at putting at easy tournaments, and I’ll take Sung Jae Im over him this week. I had faded Sung Jae for several weeks because he was coming off a back injury, but he looked healed and back to his old self at the 3M finishing 2nd and shooting 65, 70, 67, 68 in the four rounds. His putting was solid, his approaches were good I liked what I saw of him and Zalatoris might be peeking ahead to the Playoffs as he is seemingly becoming a player that only cares about big tournaments. Im has finished 24th, 9th and 6th the last three years here, I’ll expect another ho-hum performance from Zalatoris, and a solid tourney from Im who finally looks healthy.
