What is Exacta/Trifecta/Superfecta Betting?

Exacta Betting

An exacta bet involves picking the first two horses in a race in the correct order. For example, if you place an exacta bet on the Kentucky Derby and select horses A and B in that order, you’ll win if A finishes first and B finishes second. Exacta bets can also be straight or boxed.

A straight exacta bet means that the horses must finish in the exact order selected.

A boxed exacta bet means that the horses can finish in any order, if they are the first two to cross the finish line. This also allows more than two runners to be chosen.

For example, if three horses are chosen in a boxed exacta, any two of the horses need to finish first and second – but now have six possible combinations – so a $1 boxed Exacta will cost $6.

The minimum stake is usually $1 for an exacta bet, although some tracks do have a $2 minimum.

Trifecta Betting

A trifecta bet involves picking the first three horses in a race in the correct order. For example, if you place a trifecta bet on the Kentucky Derby and select horses A, B, and C in that order, you’ll win if A finishes first, B finishes second, and C finishes third.

Like exacta bets, trifecta bets can be straight or boxed. A straight trifecta bet means that the horses must finish in the exact order you selected. A boxed trifecta bet means that the horses can finish in any order, if they are the first three to cross the finish line.

The customer still needs to select the first three finishers in the correct order, but by boxing the selections, they can finish in any combination. Any three selections in a boxed trifecta is six (6) bets.

The minimum stake for an online trifecta bet is usually either $.50 or $1 minimum.

Superfecta Betting

A superfecta is an exotic horse racing bet, where the customer needs to select four horses from a single racing event and predict in which order they will finish to be considered a winner.

The four selected horses need to finish in the top four spots in the exact order predicted to win.

The minimum stake when it comes to a superfecta bet is usually around $1. However, due to the difficulty behind this bet type, some places can go as low as $0.50 or even $0.10.

Still needing to select the first four horses in the correct order, boxing the selections means the horses can finish in any combination. This also allows a customer to choose more than four runners, for an increased cost, of course.

Basics of Horse Racing Betting

How to Bet on Horse Racing | Beginners Guide to Betting Horses | Sports Betting 101

Horse racing is a popular form of betting and entertainment, with various types of wagers available to suit different preferences. Although there is race history or horses that have raced before, horse racing has the advantage of being somewhat unpredictable, which in turn creates some large payouts for small wagers.

After all, like humans playing sports on the hardwood, field, or pitch, predicting how animals will run a race is far from an exact science.

There have been plenty of upsets on the biggest stages of horse racing, including one of the biggest events of the horse racing year, the Kentucky Derby.

The most recent Kentucky Debry was the 148th edition of the prestigious race and had one of the unlikeliest winners in its history.

Rich Strike, ridden by jockey Sonny Leon, wasn’t even supposed to be in the race, but was included due to a late scratch.

Assumed to come in last place or towards the back of the pack, Rich Strike improbably finished in first place with almost zero public confidence behind the late entry.

After having opening odds around 30-1, Rich Strike had odds around 80-1 as the horses entered the starting gate and the rest is history.
