Who is Mage?

Mage was born on April 18, 2020 in Kentucky, bred by Grandview Equine. His sire is Good Magic, who was the U.S. Champion Two-Year-Old in 2017 after winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and finishing second in the Kentucky Derby in 2018. His dam is Puca, a daughter of Big Brown, who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes in 2008. Mage is a descendant of Darley Arabian, one of the three founding sires of the Thoroughbred breed.

Mage was sold twice at public auctions, first for $235,000 to New Team from the Runnymede Farm consignment at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, and then for $290,000 to Marquee Bloodstock for OGMA Investments at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale in May 2022. He is now owned by OGMA Investments, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing and Commonwealth Thoroughbreds, a micro-shares partnership that joined together after Restrepo and trainer Gustavo Delgado acquired the colt above their initial budget.

Delgado is a four-time Venezuelan Triple Crown-winning trainer who moved to the United States in 2014. He has trained several graded stakes winners, such as Bodexpress, King Guillermo and Majesto. He has also started horses in six previous editions of the Kentucky Derby, with his best finish being third with Bodexpress in 2019.

Mage is ridden by Javier Castellano, a Hall of Fame jockey who has won over 5,000 races in his career, including four Eclipse Awards as Outstanding Jockey and 12 Breeders’ Cup races. He has also won two Preakness Stakes, with Bernardini in 2006 and Cloud Computing in 2017.

What is Mage’s racing profile and history?

Mage began his racing career as a three-year-old on January 28, 2023 at Gulfstream Park, where he won a maiden special weight race over seven furlongs by three-quarters of a length. He showed good speed and stamina, coming from off the pace to take the lead in the stretch and holding off a late challenge from National Treasure.

His next start was on February 26, 2023 in the Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park, where he faced nine rivals over one and one-sixteenth miles. He broke slowly from the gate and settled near the back of the pack. He made a wide move on the turn but could not catch up with the leaders, finishing fourth by about seven lengths behind Forte, who was later named the 2022 U.S. Champion Two-Year-Old.

Four weeks later, Mage entered the Grade I Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park, where he met Forte again along with nine other horses over one and one-eighth miles. He broke better than before and raced closer to the pace. He took over the lead at the top of the stretch but could not sustain it, as Forte rallied from behind to win by a length. Mage finished second, earning 40 qualification points for the Kentucky Derby.

With his fourth-place finish in the Fountain of Youth Stakes and his second-place finish in the Florida Derby, Mage secured a spot in the Kentucky Derby field as one of only three horses who did not race as a two-year-old. He was assigned post position number three and was given odds of 15-1.

On May 6, 2023, Mage ran in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, where he faced 17 other horses over one and one-quarter miles. He broke slowly again and trailed near the rear of the field. He benefited from a fast pace set by Verifying, Kingsbarns and Reincarnate, who clocked fractions of :22.35, :45.73 and 1:10.11 for the first six furlongs. Castellano guided him through traffic and had him up to sixth by the mile marker. He then unleashed a powerful run on the outside and surged past to win by two lengths in a final time of 2:01.67.

Mage became only the third horse to win the Kentucky Derby without racing as a two-year-old since Apollo in 1882 and Justify in 2018. He also gave Delgado his first Kentucky Derby victory and Castellano his second.

What are Mage’s strengths and weaknesses?

Mage has several strengths that make him a formidable contender for the Preakness Stakes. He has proven that he can handle different distances, surfaces and pace scenarios. He has shown versatility in his running style, being able to come from off the pace or press it when needed. He has displayed courage and determination in his races, overcoming slow starts and tough competition. He has also improved with each start, showing that he is still learning and developing.

Mage also has some weaknesses that could hinder his chances of winning the Preakness Stakes. He has been inconsistent at breaking from the gate, which could cost him valuable position or momentum in a shorter race than the Kentucky Derby.

He has also had only four races in his career, which could mean that he lacks experience or maturity compared to some of his rivals. He may also face fatigue or regression after running hard in two consecutive grade I races within five weeks.

What are Mage’s chances of winning the Preakness Stakes?

Mage has a good chance of winning the Preakness Stakes based on his impressive victory in the Kentucky Derby and his favorable post position in the middle of the field. He will likely face less pressure from the pace-setters than he did in the Derby, and he will have less ground to cover than some of his rivals who will break from the outside. He will also have the advantage of having Castellano aboard, who knows how to ride him well and how to navigate Pimlico’s tight turns.

However, Mage will also face some challenges that could prevent him from winning the Preakness Stakes.
He will have to deal with the quick turnaround of two weeks between races, which could affect his physical or mental condition.

He will also have to fend off some fresh challengers who skipped the Derby, such as First Mission, who won the Lexington Stakes last month, and Blazing Sevens, who won an allowance race at Keeneland by nine lengths. He will also have to contend with National Treasure, who finished second to him in both
the Florida Derby and the Kentucky Derby, and who may be due for a breakthrough.

Ultimately, Mage’s chances of winning the Preakness Stakes depend on how well he handles himself on race day, how well he adapts to Pimlico’s track surface, how well he responds to Castellano’s instructions,
and how well he copes with any unforeseen circumstances that may arise during or before the race.
He has shown that he has talent, heart, and potential, but he will need all three to win the second jewel
of the Triple Crown.
