Who is Red Route One?
Red Route One was born in 2020 in Kentucky and was bred by Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC, who also own him. He is sired by Gun Runner, the 2017 Horse of the Year and a multiple Grade 1 winner who retired with earnings of just under $16 million. His dam is Red House, a daughter of Tapit, one of the most successful sires in North America. Red House is also a half-sister to Fun House, the dam of Untapable, another champion filly trained by Steven Asmussen.
Red Route One is trained by Hall of Famer Steven Asmussen, who has won more than 9,000 races in his career and is the winningest trainer in Oaklawn Park’s history. He has also trained two Preakness Stakes winners: Curlin in 2007 and Rachel Alexandra in 2009. Red Route One’s regular jockey is Joel Rosario, who has won more than 3,000 races and has ridden three Preakness Stakes winners: Orb in 2013, Exaggerator in 2016, and War of Will in 2019.

He started his career on turf but switched to dirt after his first two races. He broke his maiden on his third start at Kentucky Downs over a mile on turf. He then stepped up to graded stakes company and finished third in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland over 1 1/16 miles on dirt.
He ended his 2-year-old season with a fourth-place finish in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs over the same distance. He returned as a 3-year-old with a second-place finish in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park over 1 1/16 miles on dirt. He then ran second again in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at the same track and distance. He failed to qualify for the Kentucky Derby after finishing sixth in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park over 1 1/8 miles on dirt.
However, he bounced back with a convincing win in the Bath House Row Stakes at Oaklawn Park over the same distance on April 22, earning him a spot in the Preakness Stakes field. He defeated Tapit Shoes by two lengths and Victory Formation by another length and a half. He posted a career-best speed figure of 97 and covered the distance in 1:50.94.
