2022 NL East Division Odds
For the first time in over a half-decade, the Mets look poised for a championship run. The Mets last played meaningful October baseball in 2016 and have been on a postseason drought since. Last year, the Mets only won 77 games and finished third in the NL East.
At Caesars, the Mets have opened as slight favorites to win the NL East. The Braves, who are fresh off a World Series win, have slightly worse odds than the Mets. Let’s break down why I believe the Mets are a good bet to take the NL East crown this season.
2022 National League East Odds | Courtesy of Caesars as of March 29 |
---|---|
New York Mets | +140 |
Atlanta Braves | +145 |
Philadelphia Phillies | +430 |
Miami Marlins | +1600 |
Washington Nationals | +5000 |
Atlanta Braves
After winning the World Series last year, Atlanta had an interesting offseason and should still be viewed as a top team in the National League. They only won 88 games last season, but that was enough to win the NL East, and eventually launch a World Series run.
This offseason, the Braves let homegrown star 1B Freddie Freeman walk, but they traded for and signed Matt Olson to a long deal. Atlanta also bolstered their pitching by adding Kenley Jansen and Kirby Yates.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies won 82 games last year and came in second in the NL East. The Phillies had limited offensive pop last season and had a very inconsistent bullpen and pitching staff. In order to fill these holes, Philly signed free agents Kyle Schawrber and Nick Castellanos to bolster their lineup. On the pitching side of things, Philly added reliever Brad Hand and Jeurys Familia to their bullpen.
Miami and Washington
The Miami Marlins and the Washington Nationals are both in the middle of rebuilds. The Marlins are further along due to their strong pitching staff, but the Nationals have the overall best player in Juan Soto. Unfortunately for both these teams, a few good starters and an all-world player is not enough to win the NL East, let alone make the playoffs.
The Case for the Mets
The Mets are a team that seems to always have unusually high expectations and never come close to them. After a struggle of a 2021 season, the Mets let go of manager Luis Rojas and opted to bring in a proven veteran in Buck Showalter. This is as great of a move as any player signing the Mets could have made. Showalter is a three-time Manager of the Year winner with proven experience.
Not only did the Mets get their managerial hire correct, but the Mets also improved in free agency. In reality, the Mets needed help all over the field. New York sought after a more potent offense, a reliable second starter or two, and more bullpen depth.
The Mets were able to achieve all of these things and more this summer by signing Max Scherzer and trading for Chris Bassitt for their pitching staff. Signing Starling Marte, Adam Ottavino, and Eduardo Escobar should also have an immense impact.
The Mets look improved enough to win a relatively weak division, and +140 is a generous price to win the division, even with the defending World Series champs. While their main competition has improved as well, the Mets signed players that could be able to take them to another level.
We have seen that owner Steve Cohen is not afraid to put his money where his mouth is, so expect the Mets to continue to make trades and acquisitions up until the trade deadline. At +140, the Mets to win the NL East is a great bet.
