2024 NL Cy Young Predictions and Betting Odds | Strider’s Award to Lose?

Spencer Strider of Braves pitches baseball

2024 NL Cy Young Betting Preview

With an assist from Sportsmemo handicapper Steve Seagrave, the GoldSheet team is here to help you get ready for MLB Opening Day. Has the NL Cy Young award become the kiss of death? Of the last ten NL Cy Young Award winners, only two are still active with the team where they won the award. Who’s ready to break that run this season? Let’s make some 2024 NL Cy Young predictions.

The GoldSheet team has just introduced a new product called GoldSheet Lite to help you handicap the NBA, NCAAB and MLB slate each day. GoldSheet Lite is priced between $5-10 each day and features stats, analysis and recommended wagers to help you enjoy a full day of wagering. Use promo code GSLITE50 to take 50-percent off your first GoldSheet Lite issue.

The Brooklyn/LA Dodgers have recorded the most Cy Young Awards all time with 12, followed by the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves with seven each. Roger Clemens has won the most Cy Young awards with seven followed by Randy Johnson with five. There are 22 players with multiple awards won and six are still currently active in the majors.

Previous NL Cy Young Winners

Previous Winners:
– 2023 Blake Snell (San Diego Padres)
– 2022 Sandy Alcantara (Miami Marlins)
– 2021 Corbin Burnes (Milwaukee Brewers)
– 2020 Trevor Bauer (Cincinnati Reds)
– 2019 Jacob deGrom (New York Mets)

Like we mentioned above, Alcantara is the only one of those players that is still with his team. One year after winning the NL Cy Young with the Padres, Snell has signed with the San Francisco Giants. Burnes and deGrom have switched leagues and both now play in the American League.

Atlanta’s Spencer Strider is the current favorite at +450, followed by Zack Wheeler (+800) and Logan Webb (+950). Strider is still young, but at this point in their careers, most analysts know what to expect from that top trio.

The NL Cy Young Wild Card

The wild card is Japanese import Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who has attracted money in the betting market and is down to +1000. The 25-year-old Yamamoto was a five-time all-star in Japan after turning pro when he was 19.

He certainly has the pedigree and he will certainly be on a winning baseball team, but it will be interesting to see how the Dodgers manage his innings this season. With a loaded roster, manager Dave Roberts has said that the Dodgers will likely use a six-man rotation at times during the season.

He’s the chalk for a reason, but this is probably Strider’s award to lose. He led the National League in strikeouts by a wide margin with 281 while the next-best was the aforementioned Snell with 234. Strider also had the National League’s best record at 20-5 and he will be able to stack wins with an elite offense backing him up. With the exception of Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park, the other four NL East parks are very pitcher-friendly.

To Bet…Or Not to Bet. That is the Question

We understand that the +450 price probably doesn’t look very appealing for an award that will be handed out seven months from now. Take a look at Atlanta’s schedule. Depending on how the Braves set their rotation, Strider’s first string of games may come against the Phillies (on the road), the defending NL champion Diamondbacks, the Mets and either the Astros or Rangers. That is not an easy path to start the season.

Now flip the calendar ahead to May. From May 13 through June 9, the Braves play the Nationals seven times, the Cubs seven times, the A’s three times and the Pirates three times.

Perhaps Strider struggles a little bit with his tough early-season slate, and perhaps Yamamoto blows the competition away in April. There may be an opportunity for Strider’s price to climb heading into May where the Braves have a very comfortable slate of opponents.
