AL MVP 2025 Prediction: Julio Rodriguez (+2000)
We went chalk with Shohei Ohtani in our National League MVP article, but we’ll take a shot with Julio Rodriguez in the AL as opposed to the odds-on favorites in Bobby Witt Jr. (who I love) and Aaron Judge.
Julio Rodriguez is coming off his least productive season in three years in the majors after winning the AL Rookie of the Year in 2022 and finishing 4th in the AL MVP voting in 2023.
However, Rodriguez has shown flashes of dominance where he’s looked like the best player in baseball, like in August of 2023 where posted a ridiculous .429/.474/.724 slash line and 1,197 OPS to go along with seven home runs and 30 RBI while helping the Seattle Mariners go 21-6 for the month.
Rodriguez will also benefit from better protection in the order with Randy Arozarena playing a full season in Seattle.
One of the big keys to Rodriguez bouncing back is his continued mentorship of former Hall of Famer Edgar Martinez who still overseas the M’s hitting program with Kevin Seitzer taking over as the hitting coach.
One of these seasons, Rodriguez is going to put it all together for a full campaign and if its’s 2025 he’ll carry the Mariners into the postseason and be a steal at 20-1.
AL MVP 2025 Long Shot Prediction: Jarren Duran (+5000)
Jarren Duran put together a remarkable campaign in his first full major league season with a .285 batting average & .834 OPS to go along with 21 home runs, 75 RBI, 111 runs and 34 stolen bases across 160 games.
The 28-year-old is in his prime and he finished 8th in the American League MVP voting in a season where he also took home All-Star game MVP honors.
Duran showed flashes of defensive brilliance while patrolling center field in 2023 and he only improved defensively in 2024.
He’ll continue to be the “straw that stirs the drink” as the Boston Red Sox leadoff hitter in front of sluggers like Alex Bregman, Rafael Devers and Triston Casas.
I fully expect the Red Sox to earn themselves a playoff spot this season while potentially winning an AL East crown and it feels like Duran has just scratched the surface of his potential as a five-tool player.
