Angels vs Guardians Analysis
The Cleveland Guardians travel to southern California to play the Los Angeles Angels in the first of a four-game set. Shane Bieber gets the start against Michael Lorenzon.
Both teams are struggling coming into today’s play. Cleveland got swept on the road by the Yankees and the Halos lost two of three to the Orioles at home.
Guardians Great Hitting so Far
Although the pitching has been OK to start the year, the Guardians’ team strength is on offense. They enter today’s play with a 4th-best OPS of .749 and are tied for third in total hits at 137.
I like this combination because it means they can hit for average and for power. But recently, the team has gone into a mini-slump as they only scored seven runs in three games in New York.
Staff ace Shane Bieber is off to a great start to the 2022 season. After three starts and 16.0 innings, he has a 2.25 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 16 strikeouts.
The hard-throwing righty has only given up eight hits and three walks. The rest of the Cleveland staff has pitched fairly well with a 16th-best 3.62 ERA and 1.12 WHIP.
Angels Get Aggressive on Base Paths
The Angels come off a disappointing three game series with the Orioles, where they salvaged Sunday’s game to avoid a sweep. While the hitting is still really good – a 3rd-best OPS of .750, the pitching is less than average, with a 23rd-best team ERA of 4.18, but a respectable WHIP of 1.17.
SoCal native Michael Lorenzon comes off a disappointing start against the Astros, but has shown improvement in his pitch movement over last year.
Whether the converted reliever stays in the rotation or goes back to the bullpen, news from Los Angeles indicate he’ll be a key part of their pitching staff.
Looking over the team stats, I also like that they have 12 stolen bases – tied for second in the major leagues.
This means the Halos are playing a more aggressive brand of baseball, and aren’t just content to sit back and wait for the big hit. Props to manager Joe Madden for making the most of the speed in his lineup.
Angels vs Guardians Prediction
Sometimes a change of scenery is what a team needs, and this could help Cleveland coming off a tough series in the Bronx. The Angels struggled at home against one of the worst teams in baseball last weekend. The Guardians have the starting pitching edge, that’s why I like them on the moneyline.
