Angels vs Guardians Analysis
The Cleveland Guardians visit southern California to play the Los Angeles Angels for the third in a four-game set. Zach Plesac will face Shohei Ohtani in hopes that the Guardians can get off the schneid, after losing the first two games 3-0 and 4-1.
Guardians Getting Worse
Cleveland seems to have lost its hitting mojo in the Bronx versus the Yankees, and haven’t found it against the Halos. They’ve scored just eight runs in their last five games on the road. In Tuesday night’s game, they had four hits, one run, one walk and a whopping 12 strikeouts.
The Guardians started the year hitting well, as they were one of the top 10 teams in baseball in OPS. Now they’ve slid back to the pack with a 13th-best OPS of .707 and a respectable team batting average of .250.
On the bright side, right-handed starter Zach Plesac has put up good numbers in 2022. In three starts and 17.1 innings of work, he’s compiled a 1.53 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, allowed 17 hits, two walks and struck out 10. Plesac will need to have a strong outing Wednesday night to give the Guardians a chance to win.
It’s Sho-Time!
The Angels lineup is starting to find their groove. Anthony Rendon went 2-for-4 with a run scored Tuesday night, Mike Trout powered the Halos attack with two hits (including one home run), three RBI, a walk and a run scored.
The one through seven hitters in this lineup are pretty solid and if the pitching holds up, gives this Angels team a good chance to compete for the playoffs.
Starter Patrick Sandoval had an excellent seven innings of work, giving up just two hits, one walk and striking out nine.
Tonight’s starter, Shohei Ohtani has had two good outings against Houston sandwiched with a forgettable start versus Texas.
While his ERA is bloated at 4.40, the rest of his numbers are pret-ty, pret-ty good as Larry David would say. In 14.1 innings he has 26 strikeouts, a 1.15 WHIP, and allowed just 11 hits and four walks. I like Ohtani’s chances against a strikeout-prone Cleveland team.
Angels vs Guardians Prediction
After a shaky weekend series against the Orioles, the Angels have put together two solid performances in this series. And while Cleveland’s pitching has been decent, the offense has been missing in action.
The Guardians have lost five in a row, while the Angels have a three-game winning streak. As they say in financial markets, you don’t want to try to catch the proverbial “falling knife,” which right now in baseball is the Cleveland Guardians. That’s why I’ll take the Angels on the run line.
Prediction: Los Angeles Angels -1.5 run line
