Arizona Diamondbacks vs Atlanta Braves Analysis
The Atlanta Braves travel to Chase Field to play the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first of a three-game set. Atlanta took two of three from the Marlins at home over the weekend, while the Snakes lost four to the Dodgers at home.
First-Time Starter
Today will be Strider’s first start, and probably won’t go more than a few innings. So this should be more or less a bullpen game for the Braves. The Columbus, Ohio native has good stats in his 11 appearances and 24.1 innings of work, with a 2.22 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 37 strikeouts – and he hasn’t given up a home run.
However, Arizona is fourth-best in Isolated Power (ISO),12th best in OPS against right-handers, and the Diamondbacks have the sixth-most home runs at 57. I think there’s a good chance the home team could get at least one long fly off Strider today.
After a slow start, the Braves have finally found their hitting groove as they’re tied for fourth in MLB in home runs with the Astros at 60, and tied for 12th with Houston and Miami for OPS at .704. Pitching is in the middle of the pack with a 17th-best ERA of 3.95.
The Ace
Arizona starter Zac Gallen is showing why he’s the team’s No. 1 starter. In eight starts and 44.2 innings, he’s compiled a 2.22 ERA with a stellar 0.83 WHIP and 43 strikeouts. He’s only given up ten walks and two home runs, one of them in his last start against Kansas City where he gave up seven hits and six earned runs in 5.1 innings. I think he’s due for a bounce-back start today against Atlanta.
The Snakes have relied on the long ball to improve their offense this season. Team OPS is below average, a 21st-best .677 with a dismal 29th best team average of .217.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs Atlanta Braves Prediction
While I think this could be a lower-scoring game, I’ll give an edge to the proven starter in Gallen over the hard-throwing youngster. If Arizona can get the top of the order to see Strider a second time, that’s the best chance for the Snakes to do some damage. It looks like we’re getting a little value with the home team, that’s why I’ll lean to Arizona on the first five innings run line.
Prediction: Arizona First Five Innings Run Line (+0.5) -145
